The greatest upsets against the P5
I figured it would be a fun conversation.
Maybe as more nominations come into play, we can eventually rank them...

The 2006 Fiesta Bowl.
Boise State vs Oklahoma.
To me, that is the definitive upset. It made a brand out of Boise State, all of the trick plays, the back and forth action. Without a doubt to me this is number one.

Appalachian State beating Michigan when they were still FCS. To me that was the beginning of Michigan’s decline.

UCF vs Auburn.
Though I would probably rank them third so far.
1. Boise State vs Oklahoma
2. Appalachian State vs Michigan
3. UCF vs Auburn

RE: The greatest upsets against the P5
In 2009, unranked Houston beat #5 Oklahoma State on the road.
I remember being so proud for Houston at that time.
In fact, I would probably put that ahead of UCF vs Auburn.
1. Boise State vs Oklahoma
2. Appalachian State vs Michigan
3. Houston vs Oklahoma State
4. UCF vs Auburn

Is there a time period for this poll? I believe that the same upset would be much bigger in 2019 than in 1979

Nah man.
I think the thing that we were looking for, I can only speak for myself, is cultural impact. If the upset was big in 1979, did it propel that program to another level after the fact?

The 1921 Centre vs. Harvard football game, played October 29, 1921, was a college football game between Centre College and Harvard University. Centre beat Harvard 6–0, in what is widely considered one of the greatest upsets in college football history.[
Nearly 100 years later, what did Centre College do with hat rub?
A whole lotta nothing, that's what!
What good is a program defining upset if it doesn't raise your profile to another level?

Also, I think it would be fun if when you nominate somebody, you don't go and research online.
Strictly memory.
I think any one of us can just pull up a top-10 upset list and go from there. But I don't think that's very fun.

ODU vs VaTech. Pretty sure it is one of (if not) the most lopsided upsets of all time according to the robots.

Center College is a very, very nice small school in Central KY.

You mean like Appy St, and the others, none of whom are P5?
I think with the Appy State comparison, it opened a lot of eyes. It made a brand, which helped propel them to FBS

I think I have a much different definition for what an upset is than you do.

Yeah that's a good one, but do you think that's in the top five? I don't know that that upset is any better or different than Marshall going on the road and beating number 6 Kansas State.
But I don't even know if that belongs on the list.

I don't think so. Besides, I had mentioned greatest upsets against P5, and I don't think Harvard is a P5 by any means. Yes, 100 to 75 years ago, schools like Harvard, Navy and Army were the power players in college football, not so much these days.

But upsets should only be viewed in the framework of the current strengths and expectations of the teams. I think greatest upsets are those that include the two teams separated the most in their strength and talent AT THE TIME OF THE GAME.
