Maybe as more nominations come into play, we can eventually rank them...

Might not be the biggest but on Sept 20, 2003 the MAC, which Marshall was apart of then had one hell of a day.

#17 Pitt 31
Toledo 35

Northern Illinois 19
#11 Alabama 16

Marshall 27
#6 Kansas State 20

Marshall Takes Down #6 K State

I literally almost mentioned that day as a whole as well.

It was the day MACtion became a brand.
Also, I put in bold the game to include in our mention list

Current rank. Discuss...

1. 2007 Appalachian State vs #4 Michigan - A rare top 5 road win against a college football powerhouse

2. 2006 Fiesta Bowl #8 Boise State vs #10 Oklahoma

3. 2009 Houston vs #5 Oklahoma State - Eye opening road win for Houston against #5

4. 1999 Louisiana Tech vs #6 Alabama - Road win against the SEC champs

5. 2017 Peach Bowl #12 UCF vs #7 Auburn - Major scalp, helped UCF win a national championship

Honorable mention

1999 East Carolina vs #9 Miami

2015 Memphis vs #13 Ole Miss

2016 #15 Houston vs #3 Oklahoma - Home win vs Oklahoma

2018 ODU vs #13 Va Tech

2003 Marshall vs #6 Kansas State - Kansas State won the Big 12 that year

2008 Sugar Bowl #7 Utah vs #4 Alabama - Alabama was favored to win. I believe it was Saban’s second season in Tuscaloosa.

2011 Rose Bowl #3 TCU vs #4 Wisconsin

2005 TCU vs #7 Oklahoma - TCU's first season in the MWC

2003 Northern Illinois vs #11 Alabama

No need to put this up as one of those great upsets. Alabama started the season ranked 7th and beat USF and Kentucky. But sandwiched in there is a loss to Oklahoma. This was BS Before Sabin. This was an Alabama squad led by Mike Shula and they finished 4-8. Pitt went 8-5 and K State went 11-4 winning the B12 over Oklahoma and losing the Fiesta Bowl to Ohio State 35-28.

Marshall held Darren Sproles to 77 yards in that game and 35 of them was on 1 play.

RE: The greatest upsets against the P5
Going into the game, VA Tech was favored by 28 points over Old Dominion. I'm curious. Were any of these other upsets against a 28 point or greater spread? If not, with the Monarchs winning by 14 (basically, a 42 point swing) it would seem to me that you would have to give serious consideration to including that game in the top five of "greatest upsets" -- if not being number one. Just saying.

Does the "P6" count? If so, Army squeaking out that 70-14 upset of the Houston Coogs last year has to be pretty high on the list.

I second DogsWin1 nomination.

Army 70-14 win over P6 Houston, remember Army should have gotten crushed playing against an AAC

2011 Rose Bowl #3 TCU vs #4 Wisconsin

2005 TCU vs #7 Oklahoma - TCU's first season in the MWC

2003 Northern Illinois vs #11 Alabama

Respectable list. I'd move the ECU win against Miami into the top 5 because not only was it an upset against a top 10 team, it was shortly after Hurricane Floyd wreaked havoc on Greenville and the rest of Eastern North Carolina; they had to move the game to Raleigh. Fans tore down their goalposts (well, N.C. State's goalposts) after what was probably one of the most emotional college football wins in a generation.

Then two weeks later when they finally played a game at Greenville, Derrick Nix tore the Pirates a new one and that was that.

As for UCF-Auburn: It was a nice win, a program-defining win, but how big an upset can it really be for a team that won a "national championship" because of it?

Yeah, LOL.

But seriously, probably cleaner to keep it all P5.

ECU also beat #12 Miami in the Orange Bowl 31-6 in 1996. At the time it was the worst beat down the Hurricanes had at home since becoming the U of the 80's and 90's fame. In true ECU fashion we were thumped by our Daddy Southern Miss the week before 28-7 at home.

Our highest ranked win was vs #8 WVU 24-3 in 2008. It looked very nice on paper beating defending Fiesta Bowl Champs 24-3 and being the only school in Pat White's career at WVU to keep him out of the end zone but WVU was a wee bit over ranked. They did finish the season ranked #23 but I would put the two wins over Miami above beating #8 WVU

A little more color on this one... This was game #2 in a two-game series of Louisiana Tech @ Alabama. Two years earlier LA Tech went to Alabama and beat them, so the 1999 game was one in which Alabama was "gonna flex on LA Tech" for overlooking us in 1997.
Unfortunately they overlooked us again and currently sit 0-2 vs LA Tech in their last two football meetings. :)
