Having said that, I don’t see any reason the race could not be held safely on the inner quad, in this day and age.

I can only imagine coming around one of the corners, just a teeny bit wide, getting into the gutter, you hit the curb with bottom of the wheel, and are thrown into what is now a 100 yo oak tree. They will never safely move the race back to the inner loop.

Keep in mind that, even on a dry day, the sharp corner by old Wiess was likely to be at least damp, if not outright wet, because of the car wash ramp that was located there.

I don't think it can be conducted nearly as safely on the inner loop as on the current track, particularly with the increased number of colleges competing. For that reason, I can't imagine that any prudent administration would ever allow it to be moved back. But to me, trooping out to a basically featureless track on the far side on HRS simply doesn't have the same atmosphere and cachet as the loop around the quad. It's the right answer, just not the same event.

I think we need to find a way to incorporate banking in HRS as part of the next round of renovations.

This would totally work and accommodate all parties. Frees up the parking lot for the bubble AND creates a proper venue for beer bike inside HRS with the banking.

I wouldn't bank on that happening.

Quote:The Rice University Board of Trustees has approved a proposal for an air-supported multi-purpose facility on the west side of Rice Stadium that will offer climate-protected space for varsity athletics training, campus recreation and Rice student events, activities, and community partner events.

The 80,000-square-foot, air-supported structure will allow Rice coaches to dynamically and consistently integrate practice times into student-athlete academic schedules and be versatile enough to host major campus events such as commencement and convocation.

I'm glad I didn't graduate in a bubble.

Although, maybe, in a way, I did.

Glynn Hill tweet.

"Can confirm that Rice’s Board of Trustees approved the indoor practice facility which is expected to be opened on Sept. 1. It’ll be used for football, women’s soccer, rugby, track & other recreational campus activities."

Great news. They probably could use it Saturday for commencement.

I read that the lead donor attended Rice, but ended up graduating from UH. His connection to football began with his dad taking him to the games as a kid. Pretty cool.

I don't know about the others but Rugby raised donations for this and has a stake in it.

Women’s tennis through the late Ralph O’Connor raised the funds to complete Patterson but was denied access...

it's a Walt white/heisenberg/B-A-T kind of board thing....

and no, women's soccer, rugby, track and other recreational campus activities will not have access either...or limited at best for public face...it's being sold that way to pass...where have we seen this before? Oh yeah, the completion of the Patterson center
