If alumni want to donate a new facility to the swim team every 5 years, I wouldn't want football complaining about their lack of upgrades, either.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha

I agree that it's disingenuous to argue that the Patterson center is a multi-sport facility. It's a football facility-donated by a former football player, connected to the football field, etc, etc...

But, I think it's important to separate the two. I have no reason to believe that an IPF wouldn't be used by all sports at Rice just like at most schools... In the same way that at most schools, the athletic office/locker room building attached to the football stadium is meant for the football team..

I don't think it's disingenuous unless the football program actively keeps other teams from using those facilities, I don't see how it isn't a multi-sport facility. Even the swimmer who wrote the article mentioned that they go in there for training...

It is connected to the stadium and focused on the football team, but it was stressed during the opening of the facility that it was open to all athletes on campus. Just because it's primary focus is the football team, does not mean it doesn't provide value to other teams - with the obvious stipulation being that it is actually open to use by other athletes.

It's just as critical to inquire as to when the facility is open to athletes from other sports.

Some people might want to see that.

While I agree, I'd rather put up some large TV screens and use cameras for the +/- 115 yard back stretch where the view would be obstructed. I suspect it would cost a lot less than $30,000... and we could then use the facility as PART of beer/bike i.e. instead of a tiny tent or two for injuries/heat.

Think horse racing. It's really hard to see the back stretch even without obstructions

Probably cost 5k or less for a days rental on some big screens and what COULD be 'fixed' cameras

Also I see no reason why we couldn't have real restrooms. Even if we took down the inflatable part, we could have some fixed portions.

Does anyone actually watch the races at Beer Bike? Only 2 colleges care about the results. Alums just go to drink in the alumni tent and talk to people they haven’t seen in a year. This is just something for people to complain about.

This is what the Texans one looks like. A bubble on a parking lot.

No way man. That is a bubble NEXT to a parking lot. And another parking lot. And another one. Totally different.

ETA: I’m not really worked up about the appearance. If it really does service outdoor sports beyond football while also helping intramurals? That’s a win. And the campus has plenty of “visual outliers” at this point. One more isn’t gonna hurt.

+1. It's not beautiful, but it's a practical solution. It serves it's purpose. If it's good enough for NFL teams, it's good enough for Rice. At least it's on the west side of the stadium.

I wouldn't waste 30k deflating it for beer bike. It doesn't look like it would interfere in any way, and that's a lot of money to throw away once a year. Save that money for the next hurricane.

Have you ever been to Beer-Bike, or any race on an oval track?

I would think some cameras and a couple giant TV screens could be set up much more cheaply than a $30k deflation.

Or.....relocate beer bike to the soccer stadium and build a permanent indoor facility. You could build it on the South Side of the stadium and make it more accessible to other sports.

I'm sure it would be cheaper to cover the track with a temporary surface that can be utilized for beer bike.

Rear projection live video on to the inside of the bubble. The “screen” will already be there.

It’s a bubble bike!
A bubble bike?
It’s a bike, projected on to a bubble!

Given the news coming out of Jupiter Florida maybe we could use the new social science building going up next to Tudor as an indoor practice facility instead. 05-stirthepot

With the recent series of news stories which turned out not to be true or least not what they originally were reported to be, I'd suggest we let the investigation fully play out before jumping to conclusions and making any hurried decisions.

That's the last straw! If we're not willing to route the Harlem River and move the bridge and Hospital to campus, then we should just shut the program down!

No one has seriously suggested that. Don’t stoke flames that don’t need to be stoked.
