The good news: Save for WF and LSU our schedule is awful.

Southern Miss : 114
UTSA : 118
UAB : 122
FIU : 108
UNT : 98
UTEP : 130 (LAST)
LaTech : 86
ODU : 128

Any of these games are in play. ODU,UTEP, UAB, USM and UTSA are ranked right around us. FIU, UNT, LaTech are slightly ahead. UNT is an unknown.. they are 2-0 but played some pretty terrible teams thus far.

No way we're a 127 ranked team with the way we've played the last two weeks against quality opponents (arguably both Top 50 caliber). Is Wake really better than UH or Hawaii? I doubt it, and they don't play as wide open a passing game, which plays into our favor.

Couple Comments on Schedule and Players
I think Wake is underrated and a bit off-the-grid in terms of credibility. Clawson has done a great job there. Did not play great against Tulane in first game but they beat A&M in their bowl game, had a bunch of quality W's in the ACC and IMO are much better team than Hawaii and would probably favored to win against UH. I see us playing them within 10 points on-the-road as a moral victory. Our chance is that Wake is playing Rice sandwiched in between Clemson and Notre Dame also at home so could be ripe for a trap game as their minds are elsewhere. But other than that, this could be a season similar to 2006 where this team sneaks in the backdoor in November into a bowl game w their 6th victory.

Players
Big thing so far is health. I can't remember going into game four and ever being able to say that injuries are not a factor. Every year, we seem to have a MASH unit by this point in the season that opens-up big holes. This year things seem much better.

On Walters twins, I do disagree w/ the DB criticism. They were highly regarded/recruited kids with high expectations. Unfortunately, both of them have been banged-up in their time at Rice and were either injured on sidelines or playing < 100%. Now finally healthy, we are seeing the potential becoming real. Kudos to new staff finding ways to get them touches but them being hurt and not getting to see current performance in past was not DB's fault.

On Cephus, would love to see him get more touches and if we had CC throwing to him vs. current guys, he could/should/would put up Dillard type #'s. Unfortunately, we don't have that. At best, we have a game manager at QB, not a play maker that can make throws, scramble, etc. and find him. But the Cehpus is a competitor and his presence alone has opened-up the short passing game for Trammel and others as other team has to account for where he is during passing situations. Trammel is the biggest beneficiary from the ground/pound and Cephus deep threat.

And finally, hats off to Bloom for breathing life back into things. Amazing what moral victories do for hope. Beating FIU, UTEP, etc. and then getting blown-out by Coogs, La Tech, So Miss, in name your score games just demoralized/destroyed hope from all stakeholders around the program. Even Bloom commented in his presser about expectations of winning compared to last year with the players. Just wish it would have been years earlier. Imagine what he could have done with the talent of the 2013 or 2008 teams. Do agree w earlier post about open question on how Bloom will do against the bottom feeder games vs. the bigger underdog games given how team played w/ lead against PV.

Impressed with how well coached are compared to past years. Special teams play has been strong. The offensive line is young but has played well. We hve some good skill plyers and QB play has been decent the past 2 weeks. And the defense is vastly improved. We have an identity. This does remind me of 2006.

Esukpa got hurt at one point, left game for a while. Anybody have any details on the injury? When he came back he didn’t seem 100%. I was hoping he’d have a bigger 2nd half with the Hawaii defense being more worn out. The failed 4th down and goal is a play he should’ve scored on. Walter is versatile and a major weapon, but we need another between the tackles type in this offense. Myers got a few carries, wonder if we’ll see more of that.

Nahshon Ellerbe is 5’9 210 and was our leading rusher last year. If he gets healthy I’m guessing he’ll split time with Esukpa. It looked like a tweaked ankle when he limped off that they must’ve re-taped (he was only out for a series or two).

Owls are 1 hour 15 mins away from landing at HOU. https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SCX8609

Tail number: N821SY. Delivered in 2014, owned by Wells Fargo and leased to Sun Country.

My 5 win plus/minus one prediction looks awfully good at this point.

Walt, your preseason prediction was "an optimistic prediction of six wins". (Although, if the team gets five wins, you win the wager.) I guess that was the plus one and the minus one was implied.

If we invoke the transitive property of college football outcomes, is Rice currently better than Arizona and Navy? Is so, I can live with that for year 1 or the Bloomgren era! (I realize the Hawaii/Navy game is arguable, as they came back and made it closer in the 2nd half against Hawaii)

Invoking the aforementioned property would be Unprecedented Unconventional Wisdom 05-stirthepot

In all seriousness, it is hard to say where we stand. We look more competitive but have give up 40+ twice now. UH seems to be getting better (vs UA was better than 2H vs us which was better than 1H vs us). Massey puts us at 127 and that seems about right from the statistics test so far.

One thing I am happy about is that we are in every game so far till the end. That's something we haven't seen 3 games in, in probably 15 years.

Also the white unis need to go.

1. White isn't our color. Never was and sure as heck shouldn't be a primary color we use.
2. Anecdotal, but they seem to be our "Big Game Bob" equivalent uniforms. Someone called them "surrender whites" in the game thread, which is pretty appropriate given our history of wearing them on the road and completely embarassing ourselves.
3. Possibly apocryphal, however the purpoted primary antagonist to the wear gray movement is no longer at Rice.
4. They look like warm up kits.
5. Rice has no major following or brand presence. Now is the time to shed a bad look as you won't receive a ton of pushback citing nostalgia.

Going to be tough to land with these thunderstorms.

This post prompted me to check the FAA map and seems the storms are bad enough there is a ground stop for incoming aircraft (holding at origin). Owls should be ok to come in, unless it gets worse and they have to divert. Is there a lot of wind and lightning?

Appears San Antonio is a waypoint on their route (SAT) and is likely their primary alternate airport.

Lots of rain. Lots of lightning. I’d say 25-30mph winds.

That was our bet. My earlier prediction was 5 wins plus/minus one. I'm pretty sure of that.

Hey, I saw two other people repping the Rice brand last night at the Stanford game!

Agree x1000. It’s almost comically bad. One couldn’t be faulted for wondering if the game uniforms got lost in transit so we had to wear practice gear.

Looks like they looped around SW Houston to avoid the storms, then going east before cutting up to Hobby and landing on 30L (heading North West)

It's nice to be close enough, for a change, to play the 'what-if' game. For example, If we could have managed just a measly two turnovers on defense we might have been able to close the deal. Our team still just doesn't create turnovers, though. We've had 2 interceptions over the last 15 games! It's really hard not to accidentally stumble onto an interception at least every four or five games. Unfortunately you can't just snap your fingers and wish you could get more turnovers, but our staff really needs to start focusing on that aspect.
That being said, we got extremely unlucky on our sack of McDonald inside their five - McDonald's on the ground, the ball lands five feet away and takes a freakish bounce right back to him.

We also had an INT bounce off the hands of a DB, the pass looked like it was to him and not the receiver.
