I thought we’d draw more, but holiday weekend and a hot and humid day game are a tough sell.

Agreed on lots of what you say here... Hopefully by the next time UH and Rice play at HRS there will be some renovations. Also glad to hear you like our coach.
That said, it would make sense that “The Powerhouse” (as so advertised when you arrive at Hobby airport) which has 7x the enrollment of Rice and whose alumni are largely still in Houston (why leave when that UH Class Ring gets you into any board room in Houston) would have more fans than the small, second-tier private school.
UH fans are being gouged with the ticket surge price and lack of concession attendees, your lucky that of the 26K in attendance we brought 20K, you will see a dwindle of UH support if this crap continues, it will take real leadership at Rice to get this rivalry done right, put money into the overall stadium not just and endzone.

UH did not bring 20K; 13,000 - 15,000 max, and more likely 11,000 - 12,000.

Yeah, UH's lack of fan support is Rice's fault.

I've been to your stadium and enjoyed it. Nice little place. Congratulations on building the fourth largest stadium in a six mile radius. And naming it after a conference foe is definitely a marketing coup.

It also felt a lot closer to 26k actually. Meaning a lot more convergence between reported and actual butts-in-seats than usual.

Re: Rice Stadium...I guess I'm in the minority, but I prefer large old stadiums with history to minor league new ones like UH's. I actually like the old stadium vibe I get at places like the Big House or HRS. The place still looks and feels great, so while renovations are always welcomed, I much rather see a game there than at any of the CUSA stadiums I've been to (about 5 of them) or UH's. Some of the newer ones in our conference seem ready-made, like they were built in a week, and I could care less about concession stands at college football games that I care about. With the endzone facility, I'm glad there's a commitment made to staying HRS and wish it were used more often for the bigger games.
Re: Hawaii - I predicted a win in the preseason, based on their record and stats from last year, but they seem much improved after re-discovering their run and shoot identity. Will be tough, but I think our run game has a chance to be dominant, and off of that, our pass game could be very effective as well. That's been a recipe for success in the past (recalling the 1999 game at Hawaii), where June Jones offense proved to be a bad match up to Hatfield's ball control option. I'm hoping for a similar dynamic, but it will come down to our defense. If we can scheme appropriately, maybe take away some of the shorter throws with tight man coverage, I'll take my chances with the deep ones. They will score with some deep throws, but that's not the run and shoot I'm afraid of, and I'm optimistic that we have more talent than Navy to match up and keep it close. Need to get good yardage on 1st and 2nd downs - can't be too predictable and can't count on converting as many 3rd downs as we did vs UH. If our QB's were not sacked and our run game did OK vs UH's line, we should be fine this week. We made huge strides between week 0 and 1, need to continue improving, win or lose.

I said the same about Robertson, i defended it but it did not change that it was a dump just like your stadium, and to charge visiting fans a surge priced ticket with little concessions is problematic for a rival that brings the lion share of the fans. Im just saying that Rice leadership needs to step up and make the changes to the stadium for the FANS!

1. Games with higher expected attendance always have surge pricing. Everywhere. If a $25 ticket and $10 is setting you back then maybe you shouldn’t be attending football games.
2. UH didn’t bring 20k.
3. HRS is one of the best college stadiums I’ve ever been to. Easy to get in and out. Concourses are super wide and can handle the 47k current capacity with ease. Not a bad seat in the entire stadium. The only upgrades that would impact an average fan experience are better bathrooms and better concession stands and I agree we need both but I’m there to watch football not eat and use the bathroom. I’d take our stadium over TDECU any day.
4. Improvements are coming. We have rules about donations between athletics and academics. If we had a billionaire trying and failing to get us in the Big 12 we might’ve had improvements a few years sooner.

I agree about the marked up tickets and concessions. That needs a lot of work. Also, the bathrooms are criminal especially as a father taking his 3 year daughter to the bathroom. Finally, there is no reason we need to play each other at 11am in the full view of the sun.

When we are winning or have history of compelling product on the field, we bring fans to home games. 2008 is a perfect example of how home attendance is strong when teams are good. Attendance was over 35,000 and I don't remember there being such a strong disparity between the two sides.
I do think UH brought a majority of the fans to this game, probably around 15k-18k if announced attendance was 26k.

You're nuts if you think Rice only had 8,000 - 10,000 in paid attendance (which includes no show season ticketholders). Also, given the heat, both the Stadium Club and R Room were packed. I watched the first half in my seats, then moved up, as did many, many others.

I think Arizona can stomach the heat.
I think it would be jolly fun to host, say, University of Really Northern Maine at 11.00 am on a first or second weekend in September.

Concessions at HRS are abominable. I've been griping about that for the last 30 yrs. You stand in line for a coke for 20 - 30 min. Which fans are going to come back and watch another game, after missing the better part of a quarter trying to get something to eat/drink?
It's all about the fan experience. That's why it's insane to have a day game in September - nobody sitting on the east side of the stadium will come back for another game, even in the fall. The heat is brutal. I don't give a rat's about tv - work around it for gawd sake.

The West side was just as bad as the East side between 11:00am - 1:00pm.

We're also coming off of a 1-win campaign...
I'm basing my opinion on the total attendance number, and then guessing what the split was based on the stands split. There appeared to be more fans on the visitor's side than the Rice side, and the Rice side had a decent amount of red in it.
So I'm guessing that it was ~60% to 70% UH fans in the stands, so around 15k-18k (assuming 26k total).
