That hit completely turned the momentum to the Owls and Chad Richardson’s 60 yard TD run on the first play in the 2nd half started a huge scoring run. The crowd was really pumped as Hawaii had a 4 game winning streak coming into the game and expected to win easily. The kindness towards tourists on the island didn’t include Hawaii fans in those days.
Having experienced the Hawaii fans' complete misinterpretation of a MOB show, and having lived on Oahu for a time, there is no kindness in Hawaii football fans. We've endured Notre Dame (they came around), Arkansas, LSU, the Aggies - the least pleasant by far were the 'Bows/Warriors fans.
Aloha Stadium was designed as a
convertible facility, for both football and baseball, but the state neglected the maintenance on the conversion hardware (an air-bearing) and it is now a fixed facility.
The upper level sky bridges between the four seating areas are entertaining for the amount of flex designed into them. The Californians that were with me at a Rice game ('02? '03?) were having earthquake anxiety on them because of the movement.
Funds were approved by the legislature to renovate the stadium, but the governor refused to release them to perform the work (2011).
Current plans are to
replace the stadium with a smaller venue that's easier and cheaper to maintain.
