Hawaii Trip - Professor Smashmouth - 08-19-2018 06:46 PM

Not to look past the home opener, but I bought airfare to Hawaii and plan to go to the game. Does anyone know if there are any things planned for Rice supporters pre-game or any hotel deals supporters should be aware of?

We're working on something...hope to have a definite plan by the end of the week.

From the 1999 game at Hawaii. That hit completely turned the momentum to the Owls and Chad Richardson’s 60 yard TD run on the first play in the 2nd half started a huge scoring run. The crowd was really pumped as Hawaii had a 4 game winning streak coming into the game and expected to win easily. The kindness towards tourists on the island didn’t include Hawaii fans in those days.

For those interested in booking a last-minute trip, there are some great deals on fares to Hawaii from Houston - e.g. $400 r/t on AA

Indeed. The non stop DFW-HNL/OGG/KOA is operated by the international config 777-200, which makes for a great ride, especially up front.

If you dont take the DFW flight and are flying AA, go via LAX. PHX is operated by ancient 757-200s that are in the same shape (and seemingly same vintage) as Rice Stadium. Basically avoid avoid avoid.

Having experienced the Hawaii fans' complete misinterpretation of a MOB show, and having lived on Oahu for a time, there is no kindness in Hawaii football fans. We've endured Notre Dame (they came around), Arkansas, LSU, the Aggies - the least pleasant by far were the 'Bows/Warriors fans.

Aloha Stadium was designed as a convertible facility, for both football and baseball, but the state neglected the maintenance on the conversion hardware (an air-bearing) and it is now a fixed facility.
The upper level sky bridges between the four seating areas are entertaining for the amount of flex designed into them. The Californians that were with me at a Rice game ('02? '03?) were having earthquake anxiety on them because of the movement.

Funds were approved by the legislature to renovate the stadium, but the governor refused to release them to perform the work (2011).

Current plans are to replace the stadium with a smaller venue that's easier and cheaper to maintain.

As we're nearing the 1-year anniversary of Hurricane Harvey, it's worth noting that (a) Hurricane Lane is just the second Cat 5 hurricane ever to come within 250 miles of Hawaii's biggest population centers (it's supposed to get closer to Oahu later this week although I don't think Honolulu will get a direct hit?), and (b) we're looking at one of the two quietest Hurricane months on record in August, 2018 for the Atlantic/Gulf of Mexico basin.

Credit to J.B. Thompson for posting that video of Ortega's hit on YouTube several years ago.... Thompson is #43 for the Owls in the video....

People are bracing big time on Oahu. Hopefully no direct hit, but high surf, big rain, and gusts to hurricane level expected even if it weakens
i live on the south facing beach , so I am not real happy right now!

Let's hope the forecasted left turn after the right turn happens. Our thoughts are with you and all in the islands.

We are flying out Friday morning. First time in Hawaii. Are there any fan get togethers planned pregame or anything we should be aware of before we head out?

Is there any better nom de plume for the "Intellectual Brutality" era than "Professor Smashmouth"?

Good one -- but in keeping with the theme, I would call it a nom de guerre. :)

Funny thing about the name is that is was the nickname I used in a trash talk fantasy football league I was in years ago, but it does seem to work with present day Rice football.

I was on the field for that play... it was awesome to see in person. The uh fans were relentless. It was a fun time.
