RE: New football uniforms
Just based on what I’ve seen, I’m not crazy about the new uniforms, but they could look good on the field. Generally speaking, I’ve liked the new generation uniforms/helmets. I understand why some like a more traditional look, but IMO the uniform changes/tweaks are fun.

As I said earlier...TJ Carter was on the radio talking up our uniforms just last week. He didn't mention striped helmets specifically. But he said we had the best swag in the country. And he said recruits definitely notice.

We have established a rep for having exciting unis - helmets included. People never know what we're going to come out in, and that appeals to recruits. As long as we keep the majority of the game experience and season centered around blue and grey, I say go for the different looks.

I 100% guarantee the comment tj made would be the same regardless, he has bought in. End game is give some respect to the alumni and the brand! Go tigers

They are. Have you seen our record the past 4 years, including multiple wins over top 25 teams, conference championship games, chances of the access bowl game and some of the best recruiting classes in our history... The administration, coaches and players are giving the best respect they can to alumni and players by taking care of business on Saturday. And quite frankly, if the current crop of players like the uniforms and designs and are fielding some of the best teams in our University's history then I do not care that some former players do not like our current helmets... Times change and schools like Memphis have to be out doing something to differentiate ourselves from the rest.

Welcome to the board. I played in the late 70s. I'm curious when you played. I keep in touch with a lot of former players and not one has said they had a problem with the unis.

I’m 10 years younger we’ve probably met, if so sure we are friends. Confusion is uniform vs helmet. Everyone I talk to is fine with the uniforms, greatly dislikes the helmets. Everyone is entitled to there own opinions, I assure you the Bailey, stobart , sherrer guys are not big fans of the striped helmets. We all tigers though, and the goofy helmets will run its course eventually and be gone. Until then, just keep winning!

Which part of what I said is incorrect? Our record is factual, recruiting is factual and then it is simply my opinion that I am more concerned about the current players opinions on what they are wearing than what the former players think.

Nothing personal toward you.

Honestly, every former generation pretty much says what you are saying about "what them youngins wear nowadays"...

Some alumni want things the way it was when they played.
Others support current players and coaches making decisions for themselves.

I support the current players, coaches and administration. There are certain things that can be done that would irritate me as far as uniforms go. I actually had more of a problem with the dark blue stuff Rex Dockery brought in with just "Tigers" on the helmet. I was a Graduate Assistant for Rex and loved the guy and I know he felt like we needed a fresh start but I didn't like going that far from our colors.
I don't mind the new helmets and I am glad we are getting back to our more traditional Blue and Gray. It's hard to make Gray work on a modern uniform but they have done a good job in my opinion.

Nobody is saying keep them the same as when they played, what alumni , from my ear, is saying, is keep our logo relevant. Blue , crime, white grey, doesn’t matter. Memphis brand, which happens to be leaping tiger , needs to be showne

When was the leaping tiger introduced though? Wasn't it late 80's - when you played? Wonder what the players from the 60's - 70's had to say about that.

EDIT: I love the leaping tiger, BTW. I also know it hasn't been around forever.

Looks like the first time the leaping tiger was used on helmets was 1991. So, I guess players before 1991 didn't get respect when the helmets changed?

I would much rather have the primary logo on the helmets, but, if Coach Norvell says it helps recruit to have a lot of different looks, go for it.

I want to apologize to anyone I offended. Wasn’t my intent, thought just opinion based discussion. Helmets had cursive Tigers or block MSU for awhile. Jon malmo advertising came up with a Seahawks copy with tiger blob on it. Called it the tigerhalk. We wore it a few years. Most of us really hated those, and joke about them still today. The the leaping tiger began as school brand, with MSU at the time. Was on most school uniforms , helmets, basketball shorts etc. became a brand logo most everyone recognized , outside of Memphis included. School changed to university of, but kept logo, with just the M , of course. It became recognizable all over, lots of us moved away but people always comment on the helmets, meaning the logo. It’s fine , whatever you like, doesn’t change ony thing about game day. I also like the different colors and shades, kind of exciting. Just not a fan of a Cincinnati bengals helmets copy, we have a cool thing that says who we are. Just hate to lose that! Go tigers, thanks for everyone who supports us!!

What "day"? I started playing football in 1975, and we always used mouth pieces. It would have been more effective if you had said something like:

"Oh boy, that is really going to piss some former players off with that new font for writing out 'Memphis'".

Which I hate BTW....
