"Reinvigorated" Mark & Brand Coming on Wednesday
I stopped by Campus Shop yesterday and asked the salesperson how people are receiving items marked with the new logo. I didn't lead him with my impression. He said, "No one likes it. I can't think of anyone who likes it. I've heard the new AD only changed it because she wanted to put her mark on athletics. We keep saying, do a great job and that'll be her mark." I told him I think she has done a great job, then bought a Tribe soccer shirt with the old lettering.
By the way, Caleb et al met with Huge:
Friend of the Tribe,
I hope your summer season is winding down well. As you know, we are soon beginning a very exciting year on campus. There are new buildings to enjoy, a new president to appreciate, and the continuous celebration of our one-hundredth year of co-education! Who said Williamsburg was a quiet town?
Too new on campus is the slow emergence of a new athletics logo. If you are still interested, I’m writing you today after having met with Athletic Director Samantha Huge and Creative Director Justin Schoonmaker ‘09 to discuss this change.
Last Friday, we spoke for near an hour about the design itself and the process and motivation behind it. Two of our biggest concerns were resolved quickly. Namely, that the athletics budget was used heavily in creation and implementation of this new brand, particularly for the repainted Kaplan Arena court and uniforms. I’m thankful in saying this was not the case, where rather the design team was in-house, the uniforms were contractually in need of another order, and the hardwood flooring was structurally up for repair.
From a budget standpoint, though, it seems near impossible that the logo will change. Despite our disapproval, it is more prudent now to return to financially supporting our teams, rather than restart the process at a major cost.
For me, this is disappointing, as I do not think a diagonally-aligned W&M or the growling Griffin image is the right look for our ancient university. That belief has certainly been heard now, as you and numerous others voiced your opinion seen by many on our design staff. In the next go-around, as logos go through their alterations, I fully believe our thoughts on the matter will be heavily taken into account.
Going forward: games, matches, and tournaments are scheduled still. Buy or don’t buy the bookstore’s new apparel, but I hope no one will be dissuaded from supporting the teams we clearly feel so passionate about. And I hope you’re still excited to watch the next win or, at the very least, tailgate from the outside of it!
Thank you again for caring deeply about William & Mary. And Go Tribe!
Caleb Rogers
