RE: Anne Donovan passes away
I wrote this on my Facebook page the other night ...

In covering wrestling, it's great to see how prevalent the greats are when it comes to the athletic identity of their respective colleges and universities.

The wrestling programs at places Oklahoma State, Iowa, Edinboro, Lehigh (to name a few) - those athletes set the standard for their entire school's athletics identity.

But at Old Dominion, our athletic identity grew from athletes like the legendary basketball trio of Nancy Lieberman, Inge Nissen and Anne Donovan.

We lost Anne Donovan today.

Old Dominion University was a trailblazer in the world of women's sports and with that came some of the greatest athletes to ever play college sports, Donovan was one of them.

Losing a legend like Anne Donovan should make all ODU alumni sad, but knowing what she did to elevate the game of women's basketball, first the collegiate level, then worldwide, and to have her do it proudly as a representative of our school should make us also rejoice.

I came to the campus on Hampton Boulevard long after her playing days were done, but that iconic image of Donovan, Nissen and Lieberman as it was placed at the old Fieldhouse is forever etched in my memory. Even before I was a student, I knew what Anne Donovan was a part of creating.

Anne Donovan will always be a representative of our school's identity and I'm proud, as a Monarch, to know what she did on the court and off of it to raise the profile of an entire sport and an entire school.

Rest in Peace, Anne Donovan.

The @Mariners held a moment of silence tonight at Safeco Field to honor former @seattlestorm coach Anne Donovan prior to the national anthem.

Schitt... I was just at Safeco on Wednesday night versus the Angels.

Seeing that tribute on that big screen would've been profound.

It would be nice if Dr. Selig ordered a #22 patch to be worn on all ODU sports team jerseys this upcoming school year.

A patch on the football jersey is a must.

RIP Anne.

Same here - it would be most appropriate. She is and always will be one of the greatest Monarchs ever.

Wasn't sure where to post this, but this season the ODU Women's basketball team will be hosting a small tournament as part of their schedule.

ODU will host the Inaugural Anne Donovan Classic from Dec. 19-21, which will feature Richmond, Hampton and Mount St. Mary’s.
