Tubby only 2 years; The Miracle Worker only gets 3 years.

They sure get trigger-happy down there.

Just my opinion but I'm not concerned with Penny's contract details too much. He's already a rich man.

I am much more interested in the assistant's salary pool and the recruiting budget. Also, I wonder if some of the cost cutting that's gone on over the last 2 years is reversed in any way.

I get what you are saying, but that's exactly my point. If Penny isn't worried about money, then why not agree to a longer term deal with a lower buyout if he doesn't succeed. Giving a new coach a 3 year contract to go recruit players that will be there for 4 years will hurt recruiting a bit. Granted it will be better than Tubby just because he's Penny, but you know it will come up.

I think it will but, being so late in the recruiting cycle this year, I dont think its a big deal at the moment. But let me stress AT THE MOMENT. I honestly think they will need to extend him before Signing Day next year if it isnt a complete trainwreck.

Agree. The hype will help him this year. But if he underperforms this year and the admin balks at extending him ... that's going to hurt.

It wont be a great look. That's for sure.

Highlights

-Very emotional day for him due to the similar path he took compared to Coach Finch. Thought about Finch a lot today.

-Every Memphian is important to this program and should be engaged. The program is the heartbeat of the city.

-Last few years have been difficult and the fans gave up on the program. Its his duty to turn around the program and make the city proud.

-Didnt think about coaching until his friend needed help at Lester Middle School. Once he got involved he caught the bug.

-He thanked Ole Miss for approaching him about being their head coach.

-Penny say its his responsibility to put the players and a product on the court that the fans want to see. Wants FedExForum rocking again.

-Hopes his relationships with kids as a coach and mentor has left a lasting impression on them. Has made them better men.

-Ready to work on recruiting right away. Wants kids that want to be part of something special.

-Only as good as your talent. Built relationships over the last 8 years on AAU circuit.

-Had 500 texts and 85 email from coaches wanting to be on his staff since Saturday.

-Interviewing coaches this week. Tony Madlock is already hired. Wants parents to trust the coaching staff.

-Team Penny going back to Bluff City Legends.

-His minority ownership of the Grizzlies is not an NCAA problem.

RE: Full Penny Hardaway press conference video
Thanks for the recap, will try to catch the podcast later. Looks like I'll have a bunch of them to catch up on. Surprised he mentioned the Ole Miss thing. I read where they were after him, but you don't usually get confirmation on those things. I was also curious about the Grizz thing. Sounds like some good info there. Looking forward to listening. Thanks for the heads up, I assume he's making making the rounds on 92.9 and 56 today.

Reaction from the Memphis fans?

100% positive for Tony. He's a Memphis kid.

The only name I've heard floated that Memphis fans are against is Tony Barbee. Cal did his best to get Memphis to hire Barbee when he left in 2009.

The only former Cal assistant I've heard mentioned that Memphis fans are good with is Steve Roccaforte. Was an assistant under Cal at Memphis and is now the Associate HC at Va Tech under Buzz Williams.

Yeah, I'm fine with Roccaforte, too. Haven't heard any other names lately.

I have no inside info, but I'm not sure Coach Roc leaves Buzz to take a similar position with Memphis.

He's already been at VT one season longer than he was at Memphis, for perspective.

Yeah, I have no info, either. That's not something I heard personally, just a name tossed out there by the media that I would be happy with.

As a caveat, I wasnt saying he is coming. Just that his name has been thrown out in the Memphis media.

I dont think it will this summer. If they dont extend him after this season then I dont think there is any doubt it would.

My guess is that they will extend him after year 1 if it isnt a trainwreck.

I think the 3 years is a reflection of his lack of college coaching experience. Tubby got 5, but he had 40 years, and was in his 60s. So 3 seems fine to me.

It won't take a rocket scientist of a recruit to figure out if Penny is doing well at Memphis, or not. If he's doing even as well as Tubby did, the fan base will have patience, b/c it's pretty apparent he will do much better at recruiting the first 2 years, at least, b/c he will fill up our roster with the kids he has coached and sponsored over the past few years, and Memphis will have hope.

And assuming that part happens, there is no way we aren't going to be better, anyway. Hell, Madlock can coach the team. That's a really solid first get.

Yeah, I took it that way. Come to think of it, I did hear that Penny had some interest in Roccaforte, beyond the media mention. Barbee, no. Steve, yes. But that's as far as I have heard.

I think beyond Madlock, Penny is still bumping around trying to figure it out.

Which might be more extra radio interviews than Tubby did in 2 years.

We need Memphis, UConn, Cincinnati, Wichita, Houston, UCF, Tulsa and SMU all to be good. And anybody else here, lol.

I wouldn't mind creating a league that's competitive like the old Big East was.

This is the first time I'm reading this! A 3 year deal? Really?

It looks like Memphis has the same reservations the rest of the sane posters on the American BBS do. If Tubby was on a short leash, it would appear Team Penny is on a 2 foot choke chain. Now he isn't even being given the chance to learn as he goes. This is definitely the "microwave" job that Tubby was saying he wasn't interested in. Penny has to win, and win immediately or he's gonzo.

This news has me changing my prediction for a successful Penny at Memphis. I would have put it at 25% before seeing the 3-year contract. Now I've got to say 12.5%. It looks as if Memphis will not hang around to watch a high school coach earn his chops. Penny either wins immediately or it's Plan D with plan A, B, C, having already failed.

*fingers crossed for Memphis*
