We've needed a level of "protectionism," even though I don't think that is an accurate term, for a long time.
I'm happy to see Trump address this. I hope that he gets far more aggressive.
Its not really protectionism. Its more like fair-ism. I will treat your products as fairly as you treat mine. If your subsidizing your steel and then dumping it at a loss on my shores---you will pay a tariff.

Not even a genius. This kind of stuff is just basic common sense. For years, inexplicably, we have looked on with disinterest as our manufacturing base moved overseas. Manufacturing jobs are the kind of blue collar jobs that allowed high school grads to enter the bottom rungs of the middle class. Those are the jobs that have a powerful ripple effect through the economy (they have far more impact than service sector jobs). I find it amazing we had little to no objection to letting them slip away.
it sounds to me like folks are beginning to see the 'light' of #henceDJT
if there's a god, he's pulling for this experiment to work too.....

Attracting manufacturing back to the US is a great goal. Using tariffs and other protectionist mechanisms to pick winners and losers is not the right approach. Lowering tax rates across the board is the way to go. I'm not convinced that tariffs do more good to business than harm to consumers.

Company in Little Rock expects to lay people off because they buy Chinese solar cells cheaply and then manufacture the arrays and frames for installation in Arkansas. They expect demand to fall with the price increase.

He put a tariff on those, and LG came out and said that while prices were going up, they would come back down because they were about to open their american plant in TN, and appliances made there would not be subject to the tariff.
So, instead of a trade war, we've got foreign businesses spinning up manufacturing plants here in the US.
The LG thing was in the works for quite a while(article mentions June 2016) that has nothing to do with Trump or the tariff. As for the Chinese plant to be built in US that was surprising to me... certainly a welcome consequence of the tariff. (which I thought was a bad idea.)
I dont like Trump at all, nor most of his policies...but as of now this tarriff seems to be a winner, ill reserve final judgement for a while.

We are 100% in agreement.
I don't think protectionism is a fair word but it makes the point.
It isn't protectionism when you simply won't put up with unfair trade practices.

Funny, cause another firm in Arkansas said they dont expect demand to fall.
