Here's the preview of the team by The Thrresher....
http://www.ricethresher.org/article/2018...ll-preview
...appears Aviles' struggles during intrasquad has taken him out of the early mix. And once again, when talking about Freshmen contributors, The OG mentions Aker, but not Bordwine. Strange since the latter has outpitched the former throughout intrasquads.

Andrew Grottkau has been doing a phenomenal job as Thresher sports editor. The oral history piece was just epic.

News from around the block is that Ricky Salinas will be starting Friday vs Samford, Canterino Saturday vs UCF, and Moss Sunday vs the power house Virginia! This rotation will be only for this weekend. It will switch back to Canterino-Friday, Salinas- Saturday, and Moss-Sunday once we start having 3 to 4 game series against the same team!

Makes good sense, though I assume we'll be keeping that rotation for Stanford, since we start the series on Thursday, with our 4th starter (Parthasarathy, Jefferies, Amador, Aker?) going in the Sunday game. BTW, from the little research I've seen, the strength if both #15 UVA and #25 UCF is their pitching...and, of course, the strength of Stanford is their pitching, with two all-americans (RHP Beck, LHP Buboc) in their starting rotation.

Still curious who the midweek starter against TX State will be. Would assume that whoever throws that game is the Sunday starter @ Stanford unless the TX State game goes poorly.
Glad we seem to have a plethora of options though.

Does anyone have insight as to why the OG schedules four games series? To me, when combined with a midweek game, they put too much stress on the staff during the early season.

The 4-game series against quality teams are scheduled precisely to test and stretch the pitching staff early. The OG historically has given every pitcher on the active roster an opportunity early to pitch themselves into the mix. He's been willing to risk losing some early games as he firms up the rotation and bullpen pecking order.

From Perfect Game...

These teams open the year with a chip on their shoulder after being shunned from the initial Top 25 but certainly have what it takes to reach the promised land.
UCF
If the pieces come together for the Knights 2018 could be a very big year for them. The biggest question mark going into the 2018 season is how well a number of junior college transfers fare making the transition to the Division I level in the highly competitive American Athletic Conference. Sophomore slugger Rylan Thomas is expected to build off of his freshman season in which he led the team in homers (14) and RBI (53) and Bryce Tucker is one of the nation’s stingiest closers. – PE
Both Baseball America and College Baseball Central ranked UCF in their Top 25.
Apparently, they've got a stud JUCO transfer who is slated to be their Friday night starter, and whose fastball tops out at 98 MPH.

x2 - also seems to schedule stronger teams for SOS and RPI purposes.

That was my thought as well. Given the experience in the WAC and CUSA, it's very important to get quality OOC opponents, and a four-game series essentially gives Rice an extra quality game. In the 1990s, Rice would typically host a couple of four-game tournaments early in the season with quality opposition. That seems to have made way for four game series with the later start to the season.
In the waning years of the SWC - after Arkansas left - they transitioned to four-game conference series... I wonder how much influence coach Graham had on that, and whether the same reasoning as above applied? I know that coaches wanted to maintain roughly the same number of conference games.

RE: Rice Baseball Spring Intrasquads
In the last intrasquad before Friday's season opener, Silber saw his first action of the Spring, and threw 2 solid innings, with 3 Ks. I suspect he won't be ready to contribute for another week or two. He showed significant improvement throughout Fall Ball, and should be in the middle relief mix this year.
Sarchet continued his hot hitting, this time with a double against former Owl and minor leaguer, John Simms. Chandler, DiCaprio and Cruz each had a couple hits, with Ryan getting yet another double.
Time to Play Ball in earnest.
