RE: Mike Bloomgren's 1st Rice recruiting class
Montero’s videos are impressive. He doesn’t tackle you he stands you up and plants you in the ground. Although he was Mr. Football for his state he isn’t the prototype size being a shade under 6 feet. Sort of like the receiver commit who weighs 165 with a 43 inch vertical. That number is true he is a baller in basketball and those videos are amazing. This late in the process I suspect Coach B is looking for those sleepers that have the measurable but are too small for P5 scholarships. I suspect he is playing really close to the vest to avoid someone poaching with their last scholarship or a P5 using the preferred walk on card. San Diego State tried with Montero. I think some kids will figure they don’t have NFL measurable but want to play college and then do something else that takes a degree. Coach B is following about 4 qbs who are 6’ 3 and prostyle with few or no major offers. I’ll bet he snags one. Although he hasn’t announced all of his staff, it seems there are pictures every day of his current coaches on the road visiting these kids. He seems to be doing an impressive job and we will have some inroads to other recruiting grounds after this. I hope he has a big defensive tackle incognito (not Richie) out there somewhere

VJ Banks is transferring (graduate transfer). If a player looks promising his first year on the team, do not redshirt him! We’ve lost 4 or 5 of our best and most experienced players in the last couple of months to grad transfers. Are any graduated players staying?

I believe we have offered QB Wiley Green of Prestonwood Christian in Plano. At least that is what his Twitter feed indicates.

VJ Banks was not redshirted originally.

Rather, he’s been hurt for most of the last two seasons, which allowed to get a medical waiver for another year.

With regard to players staying, there are several:

Jorian Clark, Brady Wright, Corey Klingler, Sam Pierce, Parker Hanusa, the Walter twins, Sam Stewart, and Trevor Long.

I have no problem with grad transfers(GTs). They did what they came to Rice to do - get a degree. How they were used during those four years was not their choice,

In addition, the current spate of GTs may be because these players were recruited by Bailiff and played for Bailiff. Now they are facing a completely new staff and system. If you are facing complete change, why not do it someplace completely new? Whether you stay at Rice or transfer to Another U., you are facing something new. It's a unique situation for 5th year seniors with their degree this year. I think we had fewer GTs before this year and will have fewer after this year.

Yeah in all honesty, as much as I love Rice, I'd take a grad transfer year somewhere else if given the chance. Gives some of these guys one year to experience "real" college football: loud stadiums, semi-celebrity status on some campuses, and all of these guys are smart enough to basically coast academically wherever they end up. 4 years of Rice crowds + a great undergrad degree would be enough for me.

Agreed. It’s not even close to the same experience.

A little OT, but I see that we will have playing this year a redshirt sophomore, JaVante Hubbard, who is listed at DL at “only” 245 lbs, which seems a little light to me. But he is a fine young man, on the C-USA Commisioner’s Honor Roll, and I’m sure he will be a great contributor on the field.

I’m also pleased, if a little puzzled, that the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul saw fit to honor Mr. Hubbard, who wears #52:

Some good tidbits of info in this article. Sounds like Harmon is solid with Rice.

While I certainly do not hold it against the players, it does suck to be losing so many grad transfers. More than anything, i think it lowers the ceiling for 2018. Hard to expect the 18-year-old freshmen that will be replacing them to be better next season than a bunch of experienced 22-year-olds.

Was this already mentioned? Saw it in the StarTrib this morning. He sounds like a pretty good get, no? (I don't follow this stuff that closely). It says he was targeted by MN as a preferred walk-on, which I believe some people mentioned as a good strategy. Seems to have worked here (not sure how firm there are though).

Look up his video. He can really play. He's undersized at 6'2, 210 so maybe that's why he had fewer offers from D1 schools. But if he gets his weight up to a very doable 220, he's the type of player that can start years at LB. Very good pick up IMO.

I had already added Mader and Page to the 1st post. Mader is the #2 ranked long snapper in the country. I would think we're the front runners for Enechukwu now.

Interesting about Calderon.

Agreed. It’s not even close to the same experience.

J.T. Ibe in recent interview on the motivation to transfer:

“Just real coaches that are going to keep it 100 percent, keep it real with me,” Ibe said. “And a team that has potential to win a championship, because I don’t want to go to a team and go 1-11, go 3-9 or whatever. I want to win and I want to win now.”
