I'd love to see NMSU make a tournament run. Actually I'd love to see any WAC team make a tournament run. Just read an article taking about UMKC basketball which mentions that they only drew hundreds to a recent home game. They have even cut their cheerleaders out to save money. Hoping they can figure things out there, but I'm beginning to wonder if both UMKC and Chicago State are nearing the end of their division 1 stay. Perhaps moving back to the Summit would help the kangaroos out financially.

Well what is odd is how UMKC had dropped so much the past two years. They went from being middle of the pack to bottom of the WAC very quickly. Was it because their best scorer last year got ejected from the team? This is a very surprising turn of events. As for CSU, I was hoping they could do better in the ooc games, they were close to winning some....
I think Richardson probably went too heavy on the number of freshmen. And, the program is currently going through growing pains. But the Roos do have some good young pieces who should pay dividends in the future as they mature.
CSU is just money strapped. They are in a talent rich area but Dildy is probably getting mostly the scraps left by the B1G, MAC, MVC, and Horizon. Without a history of winning, it is hard to get good recruits. NMSU has experienced this in football for years.

Believe it or not its fits the pattern of UMKC rotating between 3rd and 6th place every year since joining the WAC. This years team is much more raw than other teams that did finish 6th so I wouldn't be surprised to see us finish lower.
Deshon Taylor and Martez Harrison did not get along. The roos picked the wrong guy as Deshon now averages 18 pts for Fresno. But this year they had only 8 people available to play vs Grand Canyon including two walk ons and only one above 6 ft 3.
Missouri's State Government is talking about reappropriating state university money and giving it to high schools and elementary school. This will hurt umkc travel budget, but if NMSU can make sweet 16, the conference would make a lot of money and help chicago st and umkc stay in wac for years to come.

I'd love to see a WAC school make the sweet 16 (preferably GCU of course), but it ain't happening until teams start consistently recruiting 3 & 4 star players.
Aggie roster has consistently had 3-4 star players:
4 star - AJ Harris
3 star - Sidy N'Dir
3 star - Johnny McCants
Last year:
4 star - Jermaine Haley
3 star - Braxton Huggins
3 star - Tanveer Bhullar
3 star - Ian Baker
I know those are just rankings but that's the metric you referenced. Also, NMSU has already taken down a top 10 team--a sweet 16 is definitely possible this year.
Well I hope I am wrong and NMSU does make a run in the tournament (assuming they win the WAC tournament and go to the dance). However, I still say the odds are very, very low that the Aggies reach the sweet 16. Having only a few 3 & 4 stars is not the same as having a team full of them. Plus beating Miami in Hawaii, while impressive, is still Hawaii. Strange things happen to teams when you get them on a tropical island. Plus one of your other key wins was against Illinois who is currently winless in the Big10 (0-8). The WAC still has a long way to go until "a sweet 16 is definitely possible."

Prof Scot be like:
I am rooting for NMSU to carry the WaC in March but.... all your wins are a fluke and your 3 & 4 star players don't really exist.
Does GCU offer an online course in mental gymnastics that I can sign up for?

Oh man. Did UMKC botch our 16-0 record against non-D1 teams last night?

Completely confused by your post here. I guess I forgot to take that mental gymnastics course you hope to sign up for. :)

NMSU has the squad to make a run so not sure what your talking about.

In the past, I was one to praise Menzies for landing quite a few 3 and 4 star prospects. There were some Menzies led Aggie teams which definitely had the potential to win games in the NCAA tournament "if" Menzies had guided his team better through the regular season and the Aggie had received a better seed. However, Menzies really never got these 3 and 4 star recruits to fully meet their full potential.
As for Jans, he has been given (and assembled) an Aggie team which has players who have unique physical abilities and skillsets. AJ Harris is very quick by most D1 program's standards. Jemerrio Jones' plays with motor is higher than most in D1 players. Zach Lofton's ability to create his own shot is a high P5 level. And, for only being 6'2, Sidy Ndir's might be the most athletic guard in the WAC. Really, the only skillset NMSU lacks on the team is having a legit rim protector.
Now, I am not saying NMSU will make it to the Sweet Sixteen. But I will say NMSU presents some problems for a lot of P5 program. NMSU is quick and plays with high intensity. If NMSU gets the right first game draw, I could see my Aggies winning a game or two in the NCAA tournament.
With Jans as our coach, I wouldn't put too much stock on the star rating system when it comes to future Aggie recruiting. Jans has already proven he is more than capable of getting his players to play near to their full potential. And, if his players have a unique (almost indefensible) abilities like being extremely quick, or possess a high motor, or being an exceptional athlete all the better. Keep in mind, Jans had a hand in building Wichita State's program and they did not build their reputation by signing 4 and 5 star recruits. But they beat a lot of team who did. I think Jans has an eye for talent that goes beyond the recruiting services "star rating" system. And, confidence in his ability to develop/coach a player to his full potential.

Good points. Wichita State has had one player drafted in the past 23 years and has not had a player drafted in the first round since Xavier McDaniel in 1985. But that has not kept Wichita State from producing some really good basketball teams over the years. They do a really good job of player development.
