Iowa St and Wyoming to FCS
Every time I bring up ISU to the B1G I get completely shouted down, and they're a Big XII doormat. Wyoming is in a similar non-competitive situation. Would they be served by dropping down? It would certainly make realignment easier.

I didn't think so either, I was just thinking that ISU and Wyoming complicate realignment.

How? Wyoming is in the Mountain West for the long-term future. From what I gather, the other Front Range schools won't ever leave them behind and even if they did, they'd still play OOC. So long as Wyoming chooses to be FBS, they'll always have a home in a Western conference.
Iowa State, worst case, drops down to the AAC or MWC, or is part of a rump Big 12 that picks off enough top-end G5 schools to at least maintain a tweener status for football.
I don't see how they complicate realignment at all.

Cyclone: if they go to either of those conferences, they're STILL isolated! Going to the MWC makes it WORSE! You're probably right that Wyoming is okay FOR NOW, but if the Big XII raids the MWC to rebuild, they become isolated.

No, neither will drop to FCS. A school could only "complicate realignment" if there were actually a grander plan shared by the majority of FBS or P5 schools. Instead, it's just a bunch of individual schools and conferences and networks looking out for number one.

Uh, didn't Iowa State beat OU and TCU this year? And has a solid basketball program too??

Love: that OU win put them about 50 games under .500 against them. The Kansases are about the only conference rivals they're remotely competitive against.

And its the largest school in Iowa and its AAU. They average about 55k a game, which puts them right in the middle of the P5 and ahead of schools such as North Carolina, Virginia, Illinois, Minnesota, Cal and Colorado among others. And its about 50% better than Oregon St. and nearly double Washington St. They would be top half of ACC and Pac 12 and right in the middle of the Big 10 in attendance.
They also have 18 national championships in 4 different sports.

I went to OK St @ Iowa St this year. Amazing venue. Couldn’t hear a thing.
They’ve got a great fan base relative to their population and success.

montana and Montana State would also help stabilized Wyoming if those 2 are in the conference. That would nove Boise State and Utah State to the west. All the schools are like minded institutions except for San Jose State. Southern Utah, Weber State, Eastern Washington, Cal. Poly and Sacramento State are ranked 4.

In all seriousness DaveySt, I have always been intrigued about the Montana schools going FBS. They have nice sized football stadiums and good fan bases. Plus they are real state schools. Flagship and a 2nd fiddle. I bet if they ever got in the MWC they'd do some damage like Boise did when they got the call up. Heck, wasn't Montana in the PAC until the early 60'?

I agree the Montanas are a great MWC fit! I believe Montana was in a proto-PAC 6.

No thanks. However, I don’t even accept the premise. Isu is suddenly going to stop carrying about money? They’re a doormat but a well paid one.

K-State is about 20 under .500 against everyone in the original Big 8 because they sucked for so long, should they move down too? We live in a "what have you done for me lately" society when it comes to conference affiliation, who cares if your history sucks if you're beating playoff teams and have a solid fan base now?

Iowa State only has a winning record against 1 Big 12 school (Kansas State) at 49-48-4. The others are:
Kansas: 41-50-6
Baylor: 7-9-0
Oklahoma State: 18-31-3
Texas Tech: 5-11
TCU: 2-7
West Virginia: 1-5
Texas: 2-13
Oklahoma: 6-74-2
With that being said, Iowa State brings a lot to a conference. They have good attendance for football and basketball, travel well to bowl games, and really support the conference basketball tournament. They are also the largest school in Iowa and a AAU member on the academic side.
