The Last Jedi - NOW WITH SPOILERS!!!
Somewhat disappointed and no way this was better than the The Force Awakens.

Luke was great. The scene at that end that mimicked the sun scene in New Hope was the best.

TFA connected me backed to the original films in a way that this film didn't... this one was a good fun movie with several really really good battle scenes but it had some flaws I just don't think I can get over.

..and Tigergreen Leia was to have a major role in episode 9.

It could be argued that TFA was supposed to bring us back, and that TLJ is supposed to now destroy all the preconceptions that the other movies developed. TLJ does away with the simple force vs the dark side dichotomy and dispels the notion of individuals as good or evil. Everyone in the movie has moments of good and evil. TLJ basically destroys the old model. TLJ attempts to show a universe where the jedi and the force and the dark side are part (but not all) of reality.

This would explain Kylo's 'conflict within' and the Luke's 'moment of weakness'. I understand this approach, but it is a bit risky to be that 'complex', especially for a set of movies for whom children make up a huge percentage.

Like most fans, I was drawn to the Star Wars franchise from the set of (rather) stock characters, incredibly cool graphics, outer space, etc. as a young child. The simple 'good vs. evil' dichotomy worked very, very well in virtually all of the prior movies. The Batman/Dark Knight franchise is fantastic, but certainly not 'family friendly' and is the epitome of blurred morality. We'll see how the remaining Star Wars episodes treat this concept of blurred morality.

Very true. I think that by the end of TLJ we are back to more defined lines of good vs evil. Luke's internal conflict (and entire character) is resolved, Kylo is firmly back on the dark side, and Rey is (or at least seems) more sure of herself as good. The next movie could go in almost any direction story wise, but I don't think it will need to reexamine and redefine the characters like TLJ did

The Last Jedi - NOW WITH SPOILERS!!!
This is a great read on TLJ. It articulates a lot of the conflicting feelings I’ve had about it. One friend said they felt “betrayed” in a way, and I tend to agree.

From the article:

“By telling young Rey that none of this matters, he’s also telling the audience the same thing. The stuff you love? The details that have reshaped pop culture and created a geek language that everyone speaks? Yeah, they’re wonky. Or rather, they’re broken. Your faith was flawed.”

EW has a series of articles too.

Thanks for sharing.

They do a great job of introducing new characters. I have to see it again.

Saw it last night, too. Would have liked more character development between Luke and Rey.

Are we doing spoilers here or not?

Now that the spoiler alert is up on the thread title....

I saw it last night too, and I agree with the above. I'm also disappointed that Rey doesn't "tie in with the mythology" (unless kylo ren was lying). I get that it's the "everyman" approach, but I expected more between Rey & Luke as well.

.....I also expected Leia's storyline to be more clearly wrapped up. They had already said she wouldn't be in ep. 9 even before her death, so I expected some clarity.

JJ Abrams had an interview right after Fisher's death saying that Ep 9 would be the story of Leia like Ep7 was Han and Ep8 was Luke. Dunno, maybe he was just talking out of emotion after Fishers death.
