RE: Forbes receives contract extension through 2021-22
I’m under the impression that contract extensions benefit only those coaches who fail to get it done. Can someone explain the benefits of an extension? Don’t coaches entertain other offers from bigger schools even after an extension? Will the school pursuing a coach at the SoCon level be obligated to buy out their contact?

RE: Forbes receives contract extension through 2021-22
I understand why they *think* they have to do that, and I like Forbes.....but that's just premature, methinks. That's thru the next FIVE seasons.
Of course......most of us here were repeatedly burned severely by the bartow gravy train.........so it's only normal we should be just a bit apprehensive. And the fact it was Scott Carter who's in charge now, instead of Sander, just gives me more pause. I'll be surprised if he's here through 2021-22. And if he's not, I'm in favor of *him* reimbursing the Univ. some of that cash. Of course it never works like that........but it would be a fairer method.

How dare you joke on this board. You’ll have some posters running to their “safe space.”

Looking at two years of overachievement and what Forbes has brought in this rebuilding season, I think it’s a show of support and encouragement for him to take a couple seasons and develop a really strong tournament team. Tonight was ugly, but not unfathomable with the changing of the guard. I expect ETSU to finish top 3 in conference. Do that every year, worth a contract extension.

While I more or less agree with most of that, and I personally see this year and next as "rebuilding" years (to an extent), unless he's had that specific conversation with Carter, et al (and maybe he has), then *5* seasons is just too far out. In fact, I would argue, 5 seasons out is just too far under just about any circumstances. Just my opinion.

These kinds of things are ALWAYS gambles, but if Forbes does what everyone thinks he will do, then this deal dramatically increases the buy-out required to snatch him away. In that case, some school will be paying ETSU a large sum that we can then use to go hire the next great coach. This is money we haven't had to work with in the past.

I could be wrong, but looks to me like Carter is trying to incrementally ratchet this thing up to each new, higher level, without sliding back to where we were. He is leaving nothing out on the table unused. Very diligent and focused it seems. And also a gamble if it doesn't work out.

I fully understand it was a joke, but it was a joke that wasn't funny and one that was based off an emotional reaction to the first game of the season. It's no wonder coaches hate fans for this kind of overreaction. It was a benign comment, I get it.

My larger point is that I am shocked that all of us aren't unequivocally elated over this news. We have a coveted head coach who we're trying to keep for as long as possible. And while I get our PTSD from Bartow, this situation is wholly different from the Bartow years: Even when Bartow was winning, no one wanted him. This is not the case with Forbes. The idea that this is a gamble implies there's a fifty-fifty chance this could/couldn't work out. And while there are never guarantees, his first 2 years provide compelling evidence that he's worth whatever efforts the administration need to make.

RE: Forbes receives contract extension through 2021-22
This is a dumb and stupid thread.

We have had two terrific years of exciting, winning basketball, we have had tremendous crowds once again, we have coaching staffs and an athletic dept that are engaging the students and community, we have a beautiful renovated Freedom Hall, we have a President that is a second to none and we have a true plan of action for the athlectic dept and the university.

I guess some on this board still support the old model or or are just dumb as to what needs to be done to effectively have and maintain a successful athletic dept.

Making fun or joking about making every effort to keep successful coaches or athlectic personnel is IMO classless.

If I had success at my job and I read public texts that demeaned my efforts, I would take it as an insult not as a joke

Thank You AD Carter for having the foresight to make the head basketball coaching job at ETSU an enviable postion and a huge Thank You to Coach Forbes for returning ETSU to a prominent program.

I made the damn thread. That should show I was happy about his extension. Sorry some of ya'll are part of the no fun allowed crowd.

Also calling someone classless after a clear intentioned joke(and a funny one to some, you know the people that are actually funny and such)... I bet Forbes would even had a laugh at it if he saw it.

Forbes would've actually said the same if asked. Insert chuckle here. This whole thing is about just two things though. Recruiting and retention. Bucs coaches are already fighting the "how long will you be there" thing on the trail. Simply gives them an easier and more believable counter. Second it makes Forbes buyout, if he leaves, a little larger and therefore a little less attractive to potential suitors.

In today's world if you don't have at least 5 years on a rolling basis, it might be time to keep an eye open. Objects in mirror may be closer than they appear.

A gamble doesn't imply 50/50 odds. I don't know where you've been gambling, but all gambles aren't 50/50. If they were, I would move to Las Vegas. You misunderstood my post, otherwise you and I are saying the same thing. There are no guarantees, and his first 2 years indicate this is a gamble that has the odds greatly in ETSU's favor.

It's not a sure bet, and there's a very small chance this couldn't work out. I see the "sure bets" break down all the time in college sports, and so do you. But yes, the odds on this gamble are one we would all take.
