Athleticism will only take you so far in the NBA. Everybody's a great athlete. If you don't have a solid skill set or a particularly valuable skill that you excel at (Ian Clark's 3 point shooting), you won't make it. My guess is that Hanner will have to fight his way through the D league and expand his game to have a chance.

I love ETSU players getting attention, but we all know that Hanner is not an NBA player. Most players taken in the 2nd round of the draft won't even make a team or play any significant minutes. Hanner doesn't have the skill set to play in a Power 5 college conference and wasn't dominant in the SoCon, so any talk of the NBA is silly. He got a pre-draft workout by a team that didn't have a draft pick, alongside other people who will also never play in the NBA.

Really don't mean to be negative there, its not just even in the realm of possibility that he gets a chance at the NBA.

You never know. I always like to think folks can work hard and possibly improve. I would encourage him and hope he can pull it off. I'll agree it's a long shot, but can't blame him for trying his best.

While I actually agree with both of you (*almost* completely).....we must also consider this past data point from etsubuc:

That is totally fair- I fully admit being wrong about Curry. His success in the NBA has been very impressive and I (and many other people) never saw it coming.

I do share the continued hope that one of our players in the near future could improve their game enough to make it to the NBA. I feel that Forbes has the potential to recruit that type of player who could blossom in the SoCon.

This was an exceptional opportunity for Hanner. Development is the most unpredictable of things. With the right training, opportunity, and determination, Hanner could develop a NBA-level skill and create a role for himself in The League. I saw an interview recently with Jimmy Butler and he was saying that he wasn't the best player in JUCO or even at Marquette, and now he's an elite NBA player. I know, I know, Butler and other improbable stories are just that - improbable. But my point nevertheless remains: Development is difficult to predict.

Take every opportunity you get.

Even if Hanner has zero chance of the NBA he'll probably have a great opportunity to make more money per year than most of us can imagine in Europe.

Looks like former ASUN foe & USC-Upstate alumnus Torrey Craig has landed a spot in "The League". It turns out that Craig was not only a great player in a weak conference but a great player nationally. Good for him.

You need more imagination. There is tremendous variation from country to country and league to league, but the average starting yearly income in the highest level of Euro basketball is between 65 and 100 thousand. Veterans can usually double that. Lower level league (third division or Pro B) players often make around 40 thousand plus an apartment and some living expenses.

There are between 10 and 15 Euro players total who make more than 2 million per year and about 40 who make more than a million per year. Most are european native heroes. The highest incomes are for players with teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona, CSKA Moscow, Olympiakos etc who also play in the more select Euroleague games in addition to their national league.

All that said, the NBA D League is a salary joke with players making as little as $12,000. They do get to stay "home" and have the hope of a call-up.

I wish Hanner all the best. I hope he can make the big time, if that is what he wants. Former Bucs who are playing professionally are making more money than a few college graduates of similar age, but they're not raking it in.
