RE: 21 years ago today
I was a junior in high school. A friend invited me to go to the game (he's a Vols fan). Met at his house, but couldn't find the tickets anywhere.
They'd been sitting on the kitchen table, and apparently his mom had laid a stack of bills to be mailed out on top of the tickets and had accidentally stuffed them in the mailbox with the bills. Yup, mail had already run.
We tried calling the post office, but the driver was still on his route, so he wouldn't really get the message until he was back (dang it! no cell phones prevalent then!).
We're sitting at the table mumbling & grumbling, his mom suggesting we go watch it somewhere and still try to have some fun. We weren't really feeling it.
Suddenly, postman comes pulling back up in the drive. He'd found the tickets after organizing some of the mail he'd picked up and ran them by. We jumped up and ran out the door heading to the stadium. Missed kickoff, but basically made the game. (Thanks Mr. Postman!!)
Since he'd bought the tickets, it was in the visitor's section so I was surrounded by a sea of orange. (Mind you at that time, I wasn't huge into college football in general. Was a Memphis hoops fan from growing up)
We all know how it ended! My friend obviously wasn't too happy, and of course we joked that he brought a Memphis fan and the Vols ended up losing.
Biggest win in history? Yes, to this point I'd say so
Most important win in history? Not even close. BUT, it solidified my fandom in Memphis football and got me following the game closer from that point
