I’m proud to say we have had bigger wins in our program’s recent history under CJF and CMN. As a Tiger fan, I was thrilled that we beat UTK. However, we held that victory up as our signature win for 2 decades too long.
BIGGER WINS:
Fuente Wins: BYU, Ole Miss, and Houston
Norvell Wins: Houston, UCLA, and Navy
We have a chance to beat a 3rd top 25 team in the same season, if we take take care of business vs SMU and ECU. We have come very far, since the win in ‘96. We are now competing for championships!!

Nothing wrong with declaring that has the schools biggest win. Beating a Top 5 team that had the best player in college football at QB. And on TV. No, it is and will be the biggest ever win. Unless we get a NC somewhere in the future. But I am glad we have been able to leave it behind.

I turned nine two days before this game. I went with my best friend and his dad, who simply never misses a game at the Liberty Bowl, to this day. Incredibly formative game in my college sports fandom.
Hugely monumental win in how it felt, but ultimately meaningless.
I, too, am very proud of many other wins (though over teams not ranked nearly as high as 1996 Tennessee) that we have used since then to get us where we are today.

I remember that day well. Channel 3 had an hour long pregame special. George Lapides had a top 10 list - ways Memphis could win, including the UT bus driver gets the Vols lost on the way to the Liberty Bowl. After the game, during the Memphis celebration, he admitted that with UT, being favored by more than 20 points, had really several humorous comments at the Tigers' expense. It was his way of eating a big plate of crow.
I've asked this before, is there any way to get a cd of Paul Hartedge's call of that game? I remember it was sold for a while as a fund raiser...

I want to say that back in 2004-2005 a few of the fraternity houses still had pieces of the goal post that came down during the post game celebration. I’m not sure if they are still there or not.

After the opening game in '83 when we beat Ole Miss 37-17, the fans rushed the field and took down the goal posts. The uprights broke away from the crossbar back in the day. So people were marching around the field with the uprights.
We took one upright back to our frat house in the city bus we took back and forth to the game. It was funny, the upright was poking out both sides of the bus through the windows on the trip back to campus.
Couple of days later, someone from the LB showed up and said they had heard we had one of the uprights. We gave it back to them.

I was at the game. Had only been in Memphis for a few years and was just starting to get invested in Tiger football/basketball. I remember there was a family of Tennessee fans right in front of us. At one point in the second quarter, the father said something along the lines of "C'mon, boys. Quit screwing around and put these chumps away." I've always been one to root for the underdog, and that comment motivated me to root for Memphis even more than I already was.
Here's the crappy part to the story: We left before the GW drive. My sister was babysitting and needed to be picked up. So we missed the payoff :(. Nevertheless, great experience.
I also attended the next game against East Carolina. Total let down, not that it mattered back then. The UT win would go down in history.

I put myself through school working in restaurants. Got off for the game, and a restaurant friend asked me what I’d do if we won. Without hesitation, said streak out onto the field in celebration. Was with my then girlfriend and now wife, and needless to say remained clothed. Of course when l
Returned to work, my friend asked as deadpan as possible, well did you streak through the field? We just laughed. Had a piece of the goalpost mounted on a plaque for many years before giving it to a young fan one day. Good times!
