By the way, how in hell can your assert the idea of recruiting be meaningless..ALL ya have to do is check Flecks recruiting and what we accomplished last year...13-1 He sure in hell didn't pull this off with 2 star recruits...

Several of the key players on last year's team were recruited before Fleck came aboard, including Zach Terrell our QB.

Zach Terrell. Okay...

Who else?

Moton was pretty good

Ok so we've got 2 players.

To say that last year's team was comprised of impact players from previous recruiting cycles, but completely ignore the recruits Fleck himself brought in, is disingenuous at best.

Good points.

Except nobody claimed recruiting was "meaningless."

You made that up.

Of course good recruiting is part of the equation that leads to championships. You have to have talent to win, but you also gotta know how to use the talent assembled, otherwise, why bother to take the field play the game (i.e. Akron, earlier this month, also note the LSU loss to Troy earlier this season)?

Common sense.

WMU has completely dominated CMU (and Akron) on the recruiting trails for years, based on the subjective recruiting rankings. But if that does not translate to objective performance on the field tomorrow night, the Cannon Trophy returns to Mount Pee for the first time in four years.

I always despise this conversation.

As a collective fan base, we (should) know/recognize two things:
1) Alabama has had the #1 recruiting class for about the last 10 years. That's not a coincidence.
2) WMU's success last year (13-1, Cotton Bowl) was in LARGE part due to our recruiting efforts paying off over the course of the last several recruiting cycles.

According to your theory, we should be blowing the opposition off the field on sheer talent. Why isn't that happening?

And before you start-predictably-blaming the coaching, a coach can't be held accountable for a pass that hits the receiver in the hands and he drops it.

HS recruiting is important. Game experience is equally important. You discount the latter.

...and Alabama did not receive a National Championship Trophy simply for having the top recruiting class. Clemson won it on the field.

You gotta have talent, yes, NOBODY HAS EVER DISPUTED THAT! But you discount the importance of knowing how to assemble and use that talent, or that the talent may have been overrated/underrated (see CMU QB Morris, a 5-star recruit vs. Corey Davis or Antonio Brown)

I think I’ve made my opinion on this point pretty clear. 07-coffee3

Clemson’s last 5 classes have all been Top 15 recruiting classes (2 in Top 5).

Other notable schools consistently in the top 5 over that same span... Florida State and Ohio State.

Again, not a coincidence.

You assume any of the programs you mentioned would remain contenders if Dan Enos, Jack Harbaugh, or Randy Foster were their head coaches, even with the same rosters

No way.

Both talent AND leadership are necessary. And sometimes good leadership can get more out of average talent than bad leadership can squeeze from superior talent. See Troy vs. LSU. Not a coincidence.

This may be the most contentious message board I've ever been around.....
I know a whole lot of folks who just don't come around any more for just that reason..
Talking about recruiting should be a fun topic, especially when we have 17 3 star kids and CMU has 4...... Hell, I know it doesn't predict any thing regarding our future....
