Last years class had Hueit, Godwin, Kithcart, McClinton, and Pilavios. Granted, I don't know much about Pilavios, but Hueit is probably a better recruit than Wade. I put Wade in a tier around Godwin. Kithcart is a very nice pickup.
Is it just because this years recruits are tall?
Probably because McClinton isn't playing and similar highly touted recruts in the past include Lidonde (Hueit/Godwin), Donte Hill (Kithcart), and Stuart McEwan (Pilavos). Hopefully this class lives up to the hype, but it is very difficult to get too excited when a let down has become the expectation.
Right now the only ones I am really excited about are Caver and Porter, while the Stiths could be nice role players. Hopefully there is a pleasant surprise or two and JJ catches a flash in the pan, but I'm not expecting that to happen.
The elder Stith has been our best frontcourt player the last two years, but in your mind he could be a role player? smh
You should never consider the 'hype' on a player out of HS who transfers in. The hype will have been proven right or wrong before he steps foot on campus here. We inherit the player as is not his hype from years before.
Stuart McEwan (a transfer) was not a highly touted player. He was tall. That was it. He was tall. He couldn't shoot the ball. He couldn't handle the ball. But he was tall. Not sure how you can say he was highly touted. He came in mid season out of nowhere (for a frickin reason) and disappeared almost as fast. He committed and signed here before the coaches had really evaluated him. They took him because he was...............wait for it......................TALL. They were totally shocked at how bad he was. Or are you confusing him with the guy Capel brought in? That was only 17 years ago. He too was NOT highly touted. He was brought in to be a Cal Bowdler clone. They hoped they could catch lightening in a bottle twice with similar type prospects. But there was a huge difference. Cal was broad and long. Broad shoulders, long wing span. This kid (whose name I forget but is similar to Stuart McEwan) was not touted. He was also.......wait for it.......TALL. But he had no shoulders and while being 7'0 tall he had maybe a 6-8 wingspan. no shoulders and relatively short arms. he was the Tyrannosaurus Rex of college centers. But again he was signed 17 years ago. Almost before any of the 2018 commits were born.
Lindonde!?! Wow comparing two 2/3 star recruits to someone who signed what 10 years ago? Really? there was a reason he came to ODU. he may have been a 3 start recruit. But I think we were his best offer. Others backed off of him. He was one dimensional coming in and barely broadened out from that one dimension. Remember even Blaine said he couldn't cover a tombstone. However, no one ever said Abdi may be the best shooter in the country. At least one analyst said that about Hueit. Also, if Hueit guards just one player well for 5 minutes he'll have shown more than Abdi ever did. I loved Jr. Hate talking bad about him. But he was not that good.
Hill (was a transfer) got screwed by the NCAA. We do not know what he would have done his SR year. Hill was not a PG. Kithcart is. Why compare different positions?
Again, like I said above, transfers have already dispensed with any hype long before they get here. You should not ride those coattails to show your antipathy towards our current recruits.
Have you seen Huett or Wade yourself? If not, maybe you should read what scouting services say about them before stating one is better than the other. Personally, I'm excited about a 6-5 PG. Especially if he'll be pared with a 'reported' sharpshooter like Hueit. Can't wait to see them together. Who was the last 3* PG ODU signed?
