RE: Official Game Thread: #25 Western Carolina
Looking forward to making the beautiful trip over tomorrow. Not feeling great about our chances but our guys have the potential for the upset. The cats have the ability to score from anywhere, anytime. Our D has shown it can be scored on from anywhere, anytime. I'm hoping Herink airs it out all day long and gives the bucs a chance. Would enjoy seeing JJ kick a winner to end it.

The key to this game will be the play of the shorter ETSU corners vs. the taller WCU receivers and their double set backfield. Watch for the play to roll to one side with the QB as an option and the play side RB sneaking out (crossing back to the weak side) for a screen. Look for passing plays to the RBs in the red-zone. Bucs need to shut down that rolling QB pass/run option.

RE: Official Game Thread: #25 Western Carolina
Western should've scheduled us for homecoming. They beat us like a rented mule. Our defense was stout in that first half. Great pressure on the qb and they stuffed the run pretty well. We have been in meltdown mode all year in the 3rd quarter. It was nice to see a little running game get established finally (by our standards at least, 137 yards). Western has a nice program and atmosphere. We could learn a lot from how they put in a show.

The offense and special teams were responsible for about 4 of westerns touchdowns in the second half.
If our defense or special teams doesn’t cause turnovers it is tough for us to win. Offense just doesn’t have the firepower on its own.

RE: Official Game Thread: #25 Western Carolina
So far this season we are being outscored 80-18 in the 3rd quarter. 13 of our 18 points have been against Limestone and Robert Morris.
And yes it continues to be true that our offense often doesn't give us much of a chance. But Herink continues to get pressured every time, he can't get in a rhythm at all and has to be sore after all these hits this season.
I don't think this game was embarrassing, we played about as well as we did against Robert Morris, but we played a much better team. Hopefully we can still beat UTC and VMI which would give us the 5 wins that many of us predicted for this season.

Absolutely but their first 2 drives in the 3rd were for 67 and 75 to put them up 21-3. The pick 6 broke our back and the 2nd int, blocked punt and fumble embarrassed us but the D put us in an immediate hole in the 3rd. 0-3 against purple teams this year, all blowouts.

Also I'm far from a football expert but it seems like we should try using the few dynamic offensive players we have more creatively. Guys like Lowe should get a chance to run an end around or wildcat, etc. When you lack offensive firepower it just seems like we should experiment and take some chances on trickeration.

The game was totally embarrassing to me. When are we going to arrive and stop using "youth" as an excuse? We had more breakdowns than a blue grass band today.

Thought we looked real good in the first half, defensively.. I didn't get to see much in the second. It seems the Cats figured us out after the half and exposed us. Not really happy with our halftime adjustments the past few games

Need a new OC. Bucs using old school playbook. No imagination. Defense knows our plays as well as we do. Bucs constantly behind the chains.
Three and out, over and over again. Defense constantly pressured with short field. Defense simply wears out.

I agree with most of that Buc76, but who are we going to get with a better resume than O'Cain. And he has done a really good job developing our quarterback. There has to be a reason that he has such a simplistic offense. I would replace the offensive line coach before the offensive coordinator.

RE: Official Game Thread: #25 Western Carolina
OLC has been replaced, same results. OL is not the problem, it's the play calling. Off tackle, first play of nearly ever series. Hardly ever gets more than two yards. Off tackle second play, another two yards, third play, throw in face of blitz.
If you have been in the stands, you've seen this play calling every game. The few times the Bucs throw on first down ( before they get down 17-21 points ) they have been successful. When they have used their Backs/TE in the passing game, they have moved the ball, but unfortunately the OC rarely calls these plays.
The OL and the RB's are getting unfair blame for, IMO, the same bad game plan over and over.
Every team loads the box and blitz the Bucs....... EVERY TEAM. THEY HAVE NO FEAR OF THE BUCS OFFENSIVE SCHEME BECAUSE THEY KNOW WHAT'S COMING, RUN...RUN...PASS.

Everybody keeps saying that ETSU is building its program the right way while Kennesaw keeps winning (the wrong way?).

I’m not disagreeing with the premise but KSU has played some pretty terrible teams. Outside of Liberty and Samford their FCS opponents have won 1 game total.
That said, while the SoCon is still a premiere FCS football conference, the days of having teams like app, ga southern and Marshall with budgets 2 or 3 times ours is no more. We need to be competing for championships soon.

I think one problem is we lost Losey to southern miss. We needed him to stay one more year

Losey needed to stay and O'Cain needs to hang it up. He's not evolved at all. The lack of willingness to change things up at all has shown the game has passed him by. Defensively, this is a good football team. Offensively, I feel like there's some pieces and parts but need a spark to get to that next level. The right coordinator/Offensive line improvements puts this team in legitimate contention to win this conference.
