When I was a senior in high school (1982), ANYONE who was a resident of Maryland and C student or better, could get in to UM. It was the classic "safety"/ commuter school. Somewhere along the line they made an unemcumbered commitment to improving themselves. Their progress has been impressive.

The DC area has a lot of transplant families over the past 50 or so years, not as many long term families that have been there for centuries.

I would think that the influx of higher educated northern families could've played a part in the quality of UMD's student improving over 30+ years.

btw this isn't a north vs south thing, so please don't take it that way. northern states have just been prioritizing education for longer. that's a fact.

Acosta is not a reporter, he's an agitator. He makes a fool of himself in the press room on a regular basis. He never lets whomever he's talking to finish their sentence. Do you remember the time he thought the poem on the statue of liberty was the law of the land? He might as well have been reading the lyrics from a Taylor Swift song - it has the same legal standing as that poem.

He gets owned in this exchange, but this isn't reporting, it's advocacy. I recommend that anyone who wants to see Acosta's true colors watch this til the end. He's a moron.

Growth and a change in the way students apply to schools.

As for Acosta and the article...it was a poorly written and conceived piece. As much as I like Acosta, he has developed too much of a hard on for Trump. But that's no different than this author who makes a ridiculous connection between ajournalists tweet and 25th percentile sat scores at journalists alma mater. My guess is he went to an, ur or uva.

The d-bag author went to Maryland. JMU had a better academic rep than Maryland 20+ years ago so this putz is enjoying the put-down.

Now its hard for Maryland residents to even get accepted there as freshmen. They apparently prefer the extra money from out of state students. It seems like there are more students from NY and NJ there than from Maryland.

A) this thread definitely needs to be pulled, but while it's up:

B) Acosta is a great reporter and an even better American. I'm proud to call him a fellow alum.

I agree. He's one of the best there is. Even the tweeter in chief knows that.

RE: National U - Not all Press is Good Press
I was friends with him when we were both at JMU; we worked together at the radio station and I helped him campaign for student body president. We should take it as a good thing for any JMU grad to attain those heights; look at what Lindsay Czarniak and Lee Fitting have done for us just by being vocal about being Dukes.

The White House Press Room is an antagonistic place. Even when it's likely that most of the press agrees ideologically with the White House, they still go after whoever's got the podium. In this I don't have any problem with Acosta trading barbs and constructing questions any way he wants. He's trying to get at whatever the White House is willing to reveal about it's thinking.

That said, I think all of those reporters would do well to remember that they aren't the story. He had a tweet recently that was a pic of him sitting in a room where he sat before and talked about how his exchange with Miller affected him. Some wag on Twitter called it "Acostaception". The story is what the White House says (or not) about what it is doing, not how the Press Room reporters feel about it.

Care to comment the previous interaction with the POTUS who specifically ignored him and told him he was 'fake news'? Care to comment on his dicey interaction with Obama about his frustrations on the president's approach with ISIS? Care to comment on any other part of his 20+ year career? Naw, of guess not, it doesn't fit your narrative.
