RE: UPDATED: 8/5 Practice Notes (8/6 Update on Page 4)
I saw Hare, Maddie and McIntosh a few times in the spring and fall of 2014 and thought they looked interchangeably terrible. None of them could hit the broad side of a barn in scrimmages. This group looks better than them at the same point of the year. What they do during the season remains to be seen. Obviously Hare and Maddie went on to have some great games.

I'm excited to see Huff as our #1 back finally. For such a large back he has speed and elusiveness. If our offensive line blocking is better than the previous two years then watch out because he will have a monster year.

Unfortunately I don't see Carey letting any of the QBs throw this year. If NIU was so ultra predictable with playmakers last year, how is it going to be this year with no playmakers. We are going to see the most conservative offense we have ever seen at NIU and opposition will absolutely bottle up the run

They've played 5 quarterbacks the last two years and the playcalling didn't really change. This is nonsense.

Well I hope Huff gets close to 300 carries this year. Limit the number of pass attempts and open it up over the middle for Wimann or WR crossing patterns

I lived in North Carolina then, so unfortunately didn't get to witness any of those practices. However, i do always remember being super impressed with Hare's arm when I saw him practice as a freshman, something I haven't come away with here.
From having just seen 5 of the 6 play, I would take any of McIntosh, Hare, and Maddie over Graham and Santa. I still to this day think McIntosh, Hare, and Maddie were interchangeable though. I think any of the 3 could have been really good QBs here.
How did the oline look? I would guess they have the line where they could grind down most teams we face no matter how many they stuff in the box. Maybe with the exception of BC and a couple others.
From what you're saying the dline looks deeper than it has been. True? Depth particularly on the inside should make a huge difference.
Is Dillion Thomas at safety? Lorbek look like he has the size to hold the edge as a frosh?

It's been a real battle in the trenches because both units appear to have lots of talent.
The D-line does appear to have a lot of depth. I would expect Leroy, Heflin, Lee, Webster and Corley to get playing time at tackle and Sutton Smith, Corcoran, Sanders, Wynne and possibly Lorbeck at end.
Dillon Thomas is practicing at corner. He has a lot to learn but looks the part there. With his length he could turn into a Rashaan Melvin type for us.
Overall I would say this team has a chance to be really good, depending on QB production of course. There's plenty of talent everywhere else.

Just some background on Lorbeck, he was Second Team All-USA today last year (the only player in Wisconsin to be on either of the first two teams): http://usatodayhss.com/2016/bay-ports-lo...ation-team
Lorbeck was playing out of position at ILB in high school (his coach admits as much in that story) and he's a bit small for a DE, so a fortunate set or circumstances kept him from being poached by a bigger school. Could be a very good player.

Also, if you needed confirmation i do indeed know what I'm talking about (sometimes), Carey echos a lot of what I (and 1981, not that we needed confirmation he knows what he's talking about) said in the article about practice yesterday.

Agree....Should be great opportunities for "play-action" by the QB.
And Lord knows Huff has "fresh legs".

Checking in for the first time this year: Does anybody have a real quick highlight version of what the team looks like this year, any star?

With a 1 dimensional offense I don't see more than 3-4 wins. The defense is going to have to be on the field way too much

Would like to see Childers get the nod as starting QB.

Huff should have a monster year if he's healthy. Probably will end up being the most well known player from this years team.
I think this group of corners are as good as any I've seen since I've followed NIU.
As 1981 kind of alluded to, I think this team has as much talent as any in the conference. It's all going to come down to what kind of play they get from the QB though.

The biggest limitation outside of QB is the coaching staff, primarily the head coach

They won 5 conference games last year playing 3 different QBs and a 1 dimensional offense.
As long as they don't completely **** the bed OOC again and lose to EIU, they should be at minimum a 7 win team.

Based on reports from camp and the fact that we are just over 3 weeks to the start of the season, I don't see Childers turning any heads at this point. IMO, it looks like Graham and Santa will be sharing QB duties until (and if) one of them stands out to win the job.

Are you seriously dismissing Childers based on the first few practices of camp?
