Why does Ron Tillery still have a job?
I've often wondered, over the past decade, why and/or how Ron Tillery has actually survived in his role/stayed employed as the "official" beat writer of the Memphis Grizzlies. He is practically non-existent with any offseason news and during the regular season he is practically non-existent with any in-season news.
One would think the "official" beat writer of the Memphis Grizzlies would be able to give an inkling of insight into what's going on with the team and the unsigned free agents or at least some sort of news, at all, that would directly relate to him garnering employment or providing any insight into the NBA franchise in the city of Memphis that is tied to an outside entity apart from Grind City Media.
Maybe that's asking too much, who knows.

RE: Why does Ron Tillery still have a job?
All of what you said is correct. Plus, Tillery is not liked by the current front office, so he never breaks any news. He was a lapdog for Lionel, and after that supported ZBo and TA, and now they are all gone.
The good news is the NBA more than any other major sport has embraced new media. GrizzlyBearBlues.com has a lot of new, original content. BasketballInsiders.com has excellent coverage. ESPN is improving their NBA coverage, most recently hiring Woj. The Vertical on the Yahoo site is good.
And there are more good NBA pods than you can count. If you want Grizz specific you have Locked on Grizzlies with Peter Edmiston, and now Roser is back with Verno on the daily Chris Vernon Show pod. And the FastBreak Breakfast guys are in Nashville, cover the NBA, but are Grizz fans. There are dozens of NBA pods, I've had to unsubscribe some, just too many to keep up with. NBA reporters are active on Twitter too.
Tillery is an afterthought, can't remember the last time I read one of his articles.

Makes perfect sense. I try to consistently listen to Vernon since he has covered the Grizz heavily for years.
I haven't checked out the Nashville show, may need to do that!

"Memphis is a poor sports town. I DON'T SAY ANYTHING I CAN'T REPEAT. Memphis is a poor sports town"
--Ron Tillery
This was back when the Tigers were rolling and selling out every game, and the Griz were terrible and averaging 12-13k.
I'll never forget that quote and I wrote him off as a human piece of shiat the moment those words came out of his mouth.

Tillery always seemed like he didn't ever want to be here.

He's stuck here for now because his wife was recently promoted into management at FedEx. I assume she is the breadwinner in their home.
I intentionally avoid any Grzz articles in the CA because of him. I don't want to give them the click link and help his numbers. He sucks both as a writer and a citizen of this community.

If nothing else, they could move Chris Herrington over to his spot. But, Tillery is awful.

Completely agree with everything stated. The guy brings nothing, and was equally terrible when he was co-hosting a show on 560.
I can appreciate that he's been the beat writer since day 1, but he's coasting these days. Has been for years.

Herrington does a good job imo.

Herrington is excellent. With his other responsibilities at the paper, however, I don't think Herrington would be able to travel with the team.
Which brings up the question - If Tillery stopped going to road games, would anyone actually notice?
