The amount is unknown, but it's known to have happened and have been common.

James Oakes a historian said in his book The Ruling Race page 48:

Quote:The evidence is overwhelming that the vast majority of black slaveholders were free men who purchased members of their families or who acted out of benevolence. There were literally hundreds of petitions by black masters asking to be exempted from state laws barring manumission. Often such petitions were presented by elderly blacks who feared that after their deaths their relatives would be enslaved to white masters. There were, of course, a few black slaveholders who sold off their relative themselves, particularly spouses with whom they did not get along. But there were even more successful blacks who regularly bought slaves with the expressed intention of manumitting them.

I'm sure it happened however , the main purpose of manumission was to free mainly the house slaves and children which were relational to the master.

The free Black slave owner was in the business to make a profit and resold Negro slaves and worked slaves , as was their purpose.

What an interesting situation,... free some and enslave others by their own kind.

It would be well earned criticism.
If only Watts, East LA, Ferguson, Minneapolis, Detroit, Chicago, etc were southern then such portrayals probably wouldn't even be necessary.

Willful and prideful ignorance blinds them from the facts of history.

Like my Grandaddy always said....if it's so bad in the South why do all the infernal Yankees keep moving down here? You never hear of anybody retiring and moving up north.

They seem to be picking up the pace. Guess things aren't so great up North.

3 reasons so many Americans are Getting the Hell Out of the Northeast

1. Debt
2. Weather
3. Jobs

Quote:The Northeastern exodus is particularly acute in many big cities like New York City. Since 2010, more than 1 million people have moved from the New York area — which includes parts of New Jersey, Connecticut and Long Island — to other parts of the country.

Here are the probable plot points and character arcs of this series

Actors

His amazingly attractive wife who works in the house and gets the unwanted sexual attention of all the skeevy white males
Their three kids, two boys and a girl. The girl is brilliant and the leader of the two boys even though she is the youngest
The drunken white plantation owner and his religious wife who hides her cruelty behind a veneer of Christianity
A white indentured servant who is actually a Northern abolitionist secretly helping the slaves but the slaves don't know it
Something something wise black Muslim with mysterious technology from the East that will end slavery forever

Plot
Evil corporations have allowed and encouraged chattel slavery through to the modern day.
Evidence will be presented that these evil corporations and their white shareholders actively suppress all modern technology that would make human slavery obsolete
Wise black Muslim is killed by white henchmen of evil corporation just before he is about to make the technology public
Male slave discovers evidence of this technology with help from the undercover abolitionist
Plantation owner attempts to rape the female, and his wife finds out. The wife uses her newfound humanity to help the slaves escape

That goes against what HBO actually does in their productions. They don't go for low hanging fruit and they don't go for happy endings. You ever see The Wire, Oz, Carnivale, True Detective.
