My take on Houston:

1) TEXANS (no doubt about it)

2) Astros/Rockets

3) Houston/A&M football

4) UT-Austin football

5) LSU football

6) High school football

7) Dynamo soccer

8) Cougar basketball

9) Rice Owl football

10) Cougar baseball

11) Houston Dash soccer

12) Rice Owl baseball

13) Texas Southern football

14) Rice Owl basketball

15) Houston Track & Field

16) Houston Baptist sports

17) Sugar Land Skeeters (minor league baseball)

In Houston it's clear the NFL's Texans are at the top, win or lose. The Astros and Rockets fall right behind, and their ranking depends on who's winning. After that, college football rules, with the biggest winner getting the most press. The last couple years that's been the Coogs, so Houston has been a Houston town. If the Coogs are losing, we fall down below UT/A&M/LSU.

Just my $0.02. Your perspective may differ.

I'm really surprised by your ranking of college basketball. I get that ECU might not capture everyone's attention but I thought hoops ruled the entire state of NC. Similat to Indiana. Is Greenville the exception to the rule in NC?

Wishful thinking.

I don't know about all this.

High School football doesn't have the juice like it used to. With the exception of Colerain and the GCL South schools, attendance is not what it used to be. Even with the GCL they aren't drawing crowds like they did back in the early 2000s when Elder and Colerain would pack 35,000 into Nippert. Today they are lucky to get half of that.

You probably have an argument with OSU football, but UK football does not move the meter in town. Most of the UK fans I have come across in Cincinnati are extremely casual CFB fans (they'll watch whatever is on TV). They are hardcore Cincinnati Bengals/UK Basketball fans (although I do not know a few OSU football/UK basketball fans).

The only state that loves its college hoops more than Kansas is Indiana. In the state:

TIER 1:
KU/WSU basketball (nationally, KU gets an obvious edge, but recently the state has become a hair more yellow than blue)

TIER 2:
Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas State football
Kansas City Royals

TIER 3:
Wichita State baseball
Kansas State basketball

TIER 4:
Wichita Wingnuts baseball
Wichita Thunder hockey
Wichita Wild indoor football

TIER 5:
My nephew's 3rd grade Biddy Basketball team

TIER 6:
KU football

RE: Where do your school's football/bball programs lie within the local sports hierarchy?
1) TEXANS- They've sold out every game and draw around 950,000 viewers per game in the market. I don't get it because I find them boring but they dominate the market

2) Astros-Rockets. This year, I'd give the edge to the Astros because of the season they are having, but Houston is a bandwagon town so whoever is winning bigger will draw better numbers

3) UH football- We've done a good job of capturing some casual fans. Our local tv numbers on ABC have been solid and the crowd at the OU game was 70%+ pro Coog. However, if we start to lose this year, it'll fall off quickly.

4) A&M, LSU, UT football. These 3 can change positions depending upon how the season is going, but my casual observation is the bumper stickers/t-shirts/flags for these 3 schools are roughly the same

5) Dynamo

6) Rice Football

Everything else is likely too small to measure.

If you list TSU football you have to list Prairie View football.

"Local sports hierarchy" - that implies local. Wichita State owns Wichita and it's not even close. K|Uck City had to close their ChicKUn gear store down at Kellogg and Rock because nobody would enter the place.

Interesting topic for Navy.

In Annapolis itself, the coverage from the Capital-Gazette is great: on par with the two NFL teams in terms of coverage. Lots of locals who don't otherwise have a Navy connection will turn out for all 33 intercollegiate sports.

Across the region, though, there is a lot of competition for coverage/loyalty.

Ravens
Redskins
Orioles
Nationals
Wizards
Capitals
Virginia Tech football
Maryland Basketball
Maryland football
Navy football
Georgetown basketball
George Mason basketball
Maryland WBB
Navy basketball

Both the NFL and MLB demographics are split between Baltimore and DC teams, but any of the four can rate at the top by itself. Wizards still have Baltimore Bullets loyalties so they are strong. You can debate where the Caps really go as a niche sport, but they are perennial playoff team and draw accordingly.

THEN you get to college sports. Again, you could shuffle that deck different ways, but Hokies get more play in greater DC area. Maryland is the state flagship (and Marylanders LOVE the flag-themed UA uniforms).

You can argue Georgetown's relative placement (a lot of people will say it is fading) but the point is Navy hoops is really behind the power curve.

Even lacrosse - which is important enough to our alumni and fans to be near the top of the list of reasons Patriot League is a good fit - we are behind Maryland, Hopkins, and UVA.

Amazon is likely the main culprit for a KU themed Sports Gear STore closing. The only team specific sports gear stores thriving are located on or near college campuses.
