RE: Sunbelt Transportation and Local Points of Intertest
Okay, for those contemplating a trip to Huntington:
Points of Interest:
Marshall Memorial Fountain
Southern Airways Flight 932 Crash Site
Heritage Farm
Camden Park (WV's only amusement park)
Ritter Park
Beech Fork Lake
Huntington Mall (in Barboursville)
Cuisine - Huntington is a culinary mecca full of non-franchise, top-quality food and drink.
Steak:
21 At the Frederick - (****) ($$$$) Top-shelf cuisine. A high quality American Restaurant with wonderful beef, lamb, chicken, and seafood entrees. Menu changes seasonally.
Savannah's - (****) ($$$$) See above. World renowned wine selection.
Texas Roadhouse/Logan's/Longhorn (***)($$$) - all are away from downtown, but most know what to expect here
Seafood:
Jewel City Seafood (****) ($$$$) - Right downtown. Fresh seafood brought in at least twice a week. Eat in and enjoy the very freshest of seafood and when you are finished...go to the display case and take some fresh seafood with you.
Red Lobster (**) ($$$$) - Overpriced, mostly fried dishes and disappointing lobster
Mexican:
El Ranchito (***) ($$) - Good Mexican food at reasonable prices. Right across from the stadium.
Margarita's (***) ($$) - See above, but close to Jewel City Seafood on 4th Ave
Casa Grande (***) ($$) - Tell 'em Tom Roten sent you. Supposedly fantastic guac. Located across the river in South point, OH
Japanese:
Taste of Asia (****)($$$) - Typical Hibachi with a Chinese side. Better sushi than Hibachi.
Hibachi (***)($$$) - Typical Hibachi with a Chinese side. Better mains than Taste of Asia.
Chinese:
China Garden (**)($$) is the closest, has a buffet, and delivers.
Indian:
Nawab Indian Cuisine (***)($$-$) - Very good Indian food at decent prices. It can get a little pricey going into the lamb dishes, but it is worth it.
Greek:
Navarino Bay (***)($$$) - Good quality Greek food. A little hard to find, as it it in the Marketplace.
Ribs:
Buddy's All-American Barbecue (***)($$) - Pretty good spicy BBQ. Ribs are good. Chips and salsa are awesome.
Italian:
Rocco's Ristorante (****)($$$$) - Located in Ceredo, THIS is WELL WORTH THE TRIP and may I recommend the Frutti di Mare in cream sauce. Best Italian for hundreds of miles.
La Famiglia (***)($$$) - Close to Savannah's on 6th Ave, this little Italian bistro delivers good food and good flavor.
Rocco's Litte Italy (**)($) - Just a little Italian Diner owned and operated by one of Rocco's former employees. Good sandwiches, spaghetti, and some pasta dishes.
Jim's Spaghetti House (***)($$) - Absolutely a must see in Huntington. Rumored to be the restaurant depicted in the movie, JFK ate there along with many other famous faces. The walls are adorned with Huntington history, and the restaurant is FAMOUS for its strawberry pie.
Tex-Mex:
Calamity J's (***)($$) - Just a little Tex-Mex pub with solid apps and good entrees with a little bit for everyone. Close to the stadium. Stop in and Tell Taylor, Luke, Tabby, or Brooklyn hi!
Black Sheep Burritos and Brews (***)(***) - I'd say for a lack of a better word, gourmet tacos and burritos. Worth a visit.
German:
Bahnhof (***)($$$) - Really good German food with an amazing beer menu. Fashioned after an authentic biergarten, I reccomend the jagerschnitzel, the brezel board, and the pretzel.
Pizza:
BACKYARD (****)($$$-$) - Hands down no competition if you are looking for quality gourmet pizza. They also offer wood-grilled oysters, and a sea scallop dish in buerre blanc ... It's amazing
Giovanni's - (***)($$) Local chain -Spicy marinara, good pie (right across from the Joan.)
Al's NY Pizza (***)($$) - NY style pizza from a real NY guy. Good quality pie but he's in Barboursville and doesn't deliver.
Take your pick among the national chains
Burgers:
THE PEDDLER (****)($$$) - Right beside Backyard and owned by the same person. Duck fat fries are to die for and all burgers are fresh. Gourmet burgers to be sure.
Buddy's All-American Barbecue - Fresh Burgers
Calamity J's - Fresh burgers with a twist
Ale House - Fresh burgers as well
Fat Patty's - Frozen Dog Poo smothered with other things to kill the flavor of the burgers
Marshall fans, please feel free to add to the list of anything I have missed. I didn't delve into hot dogs or Pho, but if anyone has questions, please ask.
