RE: THE DESTUCTION OF ODU MAJOR SPORTS
Other than our football program, what ODU teams went to NCAA post season play last year? Or the previous year?

A little overstated perhaps, but I think his concerns are sincere. Even though we haven't been to many post season events, I don't think we're necessarily seeing a trend. Football, baseball, tennis, soccer and in 2015 women's lacrosse were very strong. Wrestling seems to have tailed off a little, not sure if this is a problem or just a cycle. Fully expect women's basketball to pick up now with a new coach.

Winning solves a lot of ills. The men and women need to get back to the NCAAs in the worst way. When that happens the crowds will improve, giving will improve, recruiting will get better and excitement will grow. The football team needs to keep going to bowls, which basically means, don't have a losing season. With the program still young, thats a good goal. Any win over a P5, Navy or ECU would really help as well. Baseball choked this year at the end and thats a shame, but soccer, field hockey and baseball need to step it up again. Just win and keep winning, good stuff will follow.

The problem is you have to spend money to make money ie. hire quality coaches, that make more money. On the bright side it seems like we are in good shape for now with football coaches' pay, and we seem well positioned in women's basketball. I think Men's Basketball is the only place that is in bad shape as as far as salary, but that one is WAY off IMO. Like by half.

RE: THE DESTUCTION OF ODU MAJOR SPORTS
I think it's happening everywhere. Unless it's THE GAME or a game with depth i.e., Alabama vs Auburn, ODU vs VCU or UNC vs Duke there will be diminishing attendance. ECU is building to 60,000 seats in Dowdy and if you look at it's TV games, not all seats were full. I even believe that USC is reducing the Colisuem from 93,000 to like 77,000. It's not just an ODU thing, it's happening everywhere and I think it will happen more as soon we will be able to see our favorite teams on YouTube streams. I really hate this because there is nothing like going to an ODU game seeing all our friends and fellow alums on a 65 degree Saturday. I can only imagine what going to say an Ohio State game would be like. Why are people ditching the game atmosphere by being completely antisocial and watching from their homes?

It is probably for among a host of reasons (health, affordability, not wanting to get season tickets to sit in the cold or rain, conflict with work schedule, time constraints, convenience, etc.) other than the people being antisocial.

And watch parties 04-cheers I agree with all your other reasons as well.

Don't get me wrong, I would prefer to go to a game in person, but I live too far away to make a commitment every other Saturday in the fall and throughout the winter months for basketball. The Redskins are my favorite team and as fun it is to go to home games, I do like the comfort of going to a friends house to watch the game on a Sunday. Tailgating with friends is always a blast but being at home doesn't consume my entire day like going to the stadium does, and sometimes going to a home game every other Sunday gets exhausting. I went so a handful of games last year and it got to the point where I got offered free tickets (neighbor gets a buttload of tickets from his company every home game) and turned them down because I just wanted to rest and have an easy (and cheap!) Sunday at home.

I will admit it is a little sad because one of my favorite things about sports is large, loud home crowds. I loved VT football growing up and watching the Enter Sandman entrance gave me goosebumps. I loved ODU basketball games my first 2 years (09/10, 10/11) because the Ted would be full to the gills and rocking, I remember there were games where the Ted got so loud I got headaches from it, but well worth it haha. Nowadays there are 4k 70" televisions where you can see each blade of grass in super high definition, and the production value is fantastic. Thursday Night Football last year was streamed on Twitter for FREE, and it's only going to increase from there. Size of stadiums aren't as important anymore, especially if you're late to the game (like us). Alabama and similar schools will still sell out 90% of their 100k+ seat stadium, but smaller schools and stadiums will struggle to fill out if they expand.
