RE: coaches on hot seat
And how many games did it look like Florida St had for sure lost, only to find a way to squeak out a win, that one year? Was it 2013, 14? Can't remember. But they should've lost to freakin' Boston College, that season.

Sorry, but in college football, with 18-21 year old (very) young men, you just can't go 12-0 or 13-0 without a few games that you could've easily lost.

Brian Kelly might not be an elite coach, but I recall that he won everywhere he was at prior to that ... Grand Valley, Central Michigan, Cincinnati ...

EDIT: FSU in 2014 is who I was thinking about. In 2013 they did steamroll pretty much everyone they played, kudos on that season. But in 2014 ... I count SIX games won by a TD or less, including the last four of the regular season ... then they get crushed in the CFP by Oregon

Yeah, FSU 2014 and ND 2012 very similar to me. really lucky in both years. And then both got blown out in the postseason. Always felt that FSU team in '14 was so overrated. One of my favorite games ever was when Oregon beat the living crap out of FSU in the Rose Bowl that year.

Notre Dame's 2012 schedule was ridiculous. Every game was either a trophy game, a rivalry, or a tough program, with exception of Wake and maybe BYU,

So that probably just strengthens your point ... it was massively lucky for them to go undefeated with that schedule.

I am not sure that any team that goes 12-0 should be considered as simply "lucky", as opposed to "good", although it is extremely difficult and does require some degree of luck.

Luck/lucky might be an unfair word, sure.

But I think the overall gist is well given by the second game of the regular season, against Purdue, at Notre Dame stadium. Won by 3 points (20-17). Against a team that would go 3-5 in Big Ten and 6-7 overall. But it was a historic rivalry game, for the "Shillelagh Trophy", which looks like had been played every year from 1957 to 2014. Guessing ND killed that one, which is too bad. Tired of a lowly Purdue program rising up with a "Super Bowl" mentality against the Irish, perhaps?

Notre Dame's SOS was only #21- and that's after playing Alabama(from Sagarin)

using Anderson Hester which you can take out the bowl games, Notre Dame's SOS was only #31. So not an awful schedule, but not exactly murderer's row either.

The one that was the real fraud was Florida St in '14. They had #53 SOS and didn't have a single win vs a top 10 team all year long. Yet 6 wins by TD or less. Some in bizarrely lucky fashion.

stever, sure, but such statistics gloss over an infinite number of factors ... including opponents playing above their typical/average performance because of a rivalry.

1 Brian Kelly, ND
2 Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M
3 Todd Graham, Arizona St
4 Rich Rodriguez, Arizona
5 Kliff Kingsbury, Texas Tech
6 Paul Haynes, Kent St

these are the only 6 coaches with a 4 or 5. Which makes sense, given that 63 of the 130 coaches in FBS this year are in their first 3 years- or 48/130(37.5%) in the last 2 years.

They forgot one:

Butch Jones - Tennessee

When was the last time that Purdue won that game? What has been the ND margin of victory recently?

It just doesn't make any sense to play Purdue any longer. It provides no recruiting advantage and ND has the Midwest "covered" with five or six home games per year.

Playing Purdue now serves very little point with the five game ACC commitment and the "untouchable" games against Southern Cal, Stanford and Navy.

Playing Purdue and other Big Ten schools limits ND's ability to play series like the ones recently scheduled against schools like Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, and Arkansas, for instance.

OK - in light of the ACC five games, you are absolutely right.

Why make that commitment, then? I'm sure long time ND fans will love playing Wake, NC State, Duke instead of Purdue, Michigan, Michigan St ...
