RE: Rice Track & Field - Scott Filip
Filip finished 12th - he did finish the meet's final two events although I'm sure his heart wasn't in it at that point. Hardee won with 8225 points, Zach Ziemek was 2nd with 8155 and Devon Williams was 3rd with 8131 so all three will get to compete in London. I'm guessing Filip would have been 4th (he finished with 6972 despite 0 points in the pole vault). It would have been very hard for him to break the top 3 but perhaps he would have had a chance for 8000 points and a PR?

Chris finished 11th of 18 competitors, six of whom no-heighted! He cleared the opening height of 5.40m (17 8-1/2) but not the next one: 5.50m (18 0-1/2).
The top 3 all cleared 5.75m (18-10¼): Sam Kendricks (Nike), Andrew Irwin (Arkansas Vault Club) and Chris Nilsen (South Dakota). Kendricks cleared all six heights without a miss.
(Update: Now seven cleared heights in a row, having cleared 5.80m (19-0 ¼) on his first attempt.)
(Update 2: Kendricks passed at 5.85m, cleared 5.90m on his first attempt, then set a personal best 6.00 (19-8¼) on his second attempt. Only one miss all day. Nice!!)

Yesterday, it was announced that Scott Filip will be part of Team USA at the Thorpe Cup competition, this year in Dusseldorf, July 29-30. The Thorpe Cup is a team multis competition, including both Decathlon and, for the women, Heptathlon.

That's an awesome title for that particular competition.
One of the memorable parts of the Thorpe legend is this apocryphal exchange at the closing ceremonies of the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, at which Thorpe won gold medals in both the pentathlon (a track-and-field multi-event, not the modern pentathlon) and decathlon:
"You, sir, are the greatest athlete in the world." -- Gustav V, King of Sweden
"Thanks, King." -- Jim Thorpe

RE: Rice Track & Field - Scott Filip
With 1 event remaining, Scott Filip is in a tie for 4th place with 6,941 points. He is the #2 American. A rare poor effort in the pole vault dropped him in the standings.
FYI - he went 4.15 (13' 7¼") in the pole vault.
Edit: I think I should fully explain the pole vault. In the USA meet, Scott's hands were basically ripped up in the pole vault in the absurdly hot Sacramento temperatures. So, even though he is a very good vaulter, the injury undoubtedly was a factor this weekend.
