We just have our Roku and stream shows thru Netflix, Amazon prime and Hulu. Especially during the dog days of summer with nothing but reruns and 1 sport playing. Best thing we ever did and you can cancel any of them at anytime and turn them back on at anytime. Our cable bill was $140 month now it's $50 and we were using the streaming services before too. The live steaming packages are gonna be the next wave of TV. No doubt. Cable will be gone soon.

I think cable can survive IF they are able to fight back against the media companies to allow a la carte or skinny bundles like these new OTT TV packages. That would be great if they are able to...Dish and Verizon FIOS are offering Flex packages that compete with the OTT services and offering without sports channels included. Sports packages for $10 can be added on.

Is YouTubeTV on Roku or Amazon yet? I am definately interested in that one for sports.

What I don't is why Cable does not challenge with their own apps and features. I think it is not the cost of getting the networks but losing the cash cow of fleecing you to rent boxes and modems. A story that never seems to get covered. They were like AT&T when the rented phones for years.

I have Hulu Live TV and it does not work with Roku yet (for anyone thinking of switching). I bought a Chromecast which I promptly returned after I found out how incredibly terrible they are compared to Roku. Now I watch Hulu TV on a refurbed Apple TV 4.

Another warning though, the Hulu TV app is an absolute piece of trash. Probably one of the worst I've used interface-wise, but its the only one that has CBSSN so I guess I can live with it until Youtube TV makes it to Memphis.

The price shakeout from cord cutting is going to be interesting.... Cable might go up but all these cheap apps will start charging more as they won't be offset by the cable side of their revenue. The bottom line is you are going to pay someone, somewhere, and some point to access the content. Even the internet access might get some pricing changes for the cost to keep the networks up and stable to handle high bandwidth usage for lag less video.

Since when can you get a cable package for $40? Our cable (internet and tv) package was about $150 per month before we cancelled. Now we pay $25 for internet. So, essentially, my tv was costing me over $100.

BullsFanInTx,

If you have spectrum, all you need is the internet. In my area the highest you can get 300MPS, I have been doing it over a year. I actually had to get Internet and Lifeline cable to get a $40 discount instead of just what internet only would cost.

I will say with Roku, you can use the spectrum app so I get my locals. I also advise buying your on Modem, it pays for itself in one year. I use PSVUE for the DVR and get access to about every game and event I want but I don't get CBSSPORTS. In your case, you may need to do Hulu or Sling. No reason to be paying 200 bucks a month.

If you do Hulu, let me know how the ROKU interface with life goes. Only thing I can't stand about PSVUE on ROKU. My Fire blows away the ROKU PSVUE interface. 04-cheers

The problem is us old timers are afraid to cut the cord and don't really understand all these new options. All we know is cable, have had it the past 25-30 years.

Bull,
I am 80's college graduate and it was not difficult. Basically there is no cord cutting. You still need the Spectrum Cable or any other service that may be in your area like FIOS or AT&T run to your house for cable unless you get your service via WIFI. I only have spectrum. I still like the cable run for more stabilty, old timer in me.

Since you want CBSSPORTS I would recommend sling over view, even though I think PSVUE provided far better DVR service and cheaper. The cost savings does not come with the package, it will come with the non rental of hardware. I pay ~90 a month for Spectrum Internet and lifeline cable, the old Locals and few extra cable. The wanted 130 if I only got internet, go figure. I spend ~45 on PSVUE. The savings comes with really with the stop leasing of Hardware.

Think about this like the old ATT in the 70's. Buy your own modem, $120 which is a 10 a month fee. In one year it pays for it self. Box rentals 5-10 a box. Lets say you go with the top of the Roku Box instead of Stick, and you want two again probably to have one for two seperate rooms, you can get them for 150. I would even say Box and stick to lower to about 100. Again in a year you recoup savings within a year.

Spectrum has an app for Roku, not amazon. Would love them to get Amazon but that is another story. The spectrum app works just like the TV listing. You also get access to Ondemand and Select Shows via the menu to watch later. It does not have DVR function for live events or skipping commercials but that is why I have view.

If you want to PM me, I will be glad to answer any other questions. I will say my 85 year old mom made us by her a ROKU TV and she loves it. If you can use Netflix or Hulu, you can do a live tv app.

As OP said originally, Hulu now has ESPN, FS1, CBSSN, a bunch of other channels, something like 50 hrs of DVR, and live tv in their package.

Is your tv a "smart tv"? If so, it probably has a Hulu app built in. Easiest possible thing to do would be to cancel cable (but keep internet), get a Hulu subscription, and watch it like normal tv.

I'm hoping we ditch cbs sports in the next AAC contract. Really my only complaint against Sony Vue is not getting that channel.

But the fact remains many of us will have to have CBS-SN to watch our teams play this year. ECU is on CBS-SN early and often as I bet a few more ECU games will be sold to CBS-SN. Yesterday it was announced that Uconn's game vs Boston College will be on CBS-SN. ESPN has given them a lot more AAC games than I think anyone anticipated....maybe I'm wrong and this was a given but I kept hearing "Big 10 going with Fox means more AAC games on ESPN"....

They just dropped beIN sports. UCF played a game on there last season, hopefully not this year.

beIN was part of the c-USA deal. We shouldn't have anything this season on that channel.

All of these options are why college TV revenues can't continue to be increased or even sustained long term. ESPN, without radical restructuring, will simply become a production company as their principal product (unless they can get ALL the major NCAA sports products - & they can't) & cable will simply become an internet service provider with satellite services providers (like Directv & Dish) becoming alternative programming sources.

Cable is going to be forced to offer skinny bundles too. They are already at a disadvantage with higher taxes with traditional cable. Then the cost of renting these boxes. I think they will have to offer a streaming package.
