RE: Liberty to announce 2018 schedule Sat and future FBS games
Idaho & NMSU did this I believe this. I believe this is not something long term. I posted earlier i assume if either can get a FBS team for that year to meet home minimum i would imagine they can move that game out.

I do agree getting 4 games with Army and getting Wake, UVA and BYU to come to Lynchburg is impressive in such a short time. I would not be surprised with other 2 for 1 with the ACC and AAC. (Duke, ECU, Cinci, Miami). H&H with CUSA, MAC and SB. (App, Coastal, Charlotte, Ohio, EMU, UAB)

SB wouldn't take them after years of trying. The reason they are Indy is due to the SB saying no.

I don't like that so many eastern schools are adding FBS football. It's going to effect ECU getting H&H's with ACC schools like in the past. I won't even get into Recruiting
5 new area FBS teams:
App St: Has played or scheduled ACC teams including Miami, Wake & UNC

Old Dominion: Has played and scheduled Wake, UNC & Virgina Tech (3 home games with VT)

Charlotte: Home games with Duke, UNC and Maryland

Liberty: Home games with Virginia and Wake

Coastal Carolina: no one yet

ECU has a lot of advantages over those other schools---but yes, extra schools fishing the same grounds never helps. Even if each only gets 1 or 2 guys that would have swung your way---it starts to add up. I think that one of the reasons S Miss isn't as dominant as they used to be. They used to be the only choice for those kids in Miss/Louisiana/S Bama area that wanted to win football games and got overlooked by the SEC powers. Between Ole' Miss and Miss St getting better and the extra FBS teams that are now more effectively recruiting the area (LaTech/ULL/ULM/USA/ArkySt/Tulane etc)---S MIss just isn't getting the same number of overlooked diamonds they used to. They still get talent---but even if each of those schools just get 1 or 2 kids that would have been Golden Eagles--it starts to have an effect on depth after a while.

Preaching to the choir man. Been saying that for a long time.

People will complain about an in-season home and home with Liberty because they'd rather play "regional rivals" like Southern Utah, Northern Colorado, Western Montana, and College of Idaho.

RE: Liberty to announce 2018 schedule Sat and future FBS games
Nice job by Liberty getting the schedule together. However this is not easily repeated by any other school. Some serious coin was dropped to make this happen.

North Texas was scheduled to play Army on September 8th. Liberty bought this game out and replaced UNT in the slot, and gave UNT a road game on September 22nd. No question money changed hands to push out that UNT at Army game a few years. This however was a very shrewd business transaction IMO, where Liberty parlayed it into a 4 game series with Army and a 2 game series with UNT (return game in 2021). They also bought out Troy's game at UMass on November 3rd, to gain a late season game. Troy still has a relatively late road game at Lynchburg on October 13th. This looks like a one time buyout for both schools. Old Dominion as a one off coming in 2018, and Troy in 2019 are also purchases.

This sort of dealing cannot be as easily done y a public school that has to stay in budget. New Mexico State is struggling to finish their 2018 schedule and had to take the Liberty offer, which gave the Flames the late November home date, something desperately needed by the Aggies (this also suggests it's not completely "in kind" deal, the Aggies likely get some cash out of it; and equal deal would see the 2019 late game in Las Cruces to balance the 2018).

FYI, I have no problem with market place transactions like this. It is an advantage a private school like liberty has.The public schools that accepted these offers did so because it was advantageous for them and a good deal. All I am saying is this is something that Idaho, for example, let alone New Mexico State, could not possibly do.

And it could be stated that Liberty has a much stronger schedule and status than if it had been an SBC school playing a conference schedule with 1 or 2 P5 OOC games.

With Army, BYU, UMass, New Mexico St, and Liberty---late season scheduling is now a bit easier than it used to be. If these schools work together---they can make being indy a little easier. Being Indy still sucks in a many ways, but I think with 5 teams it becomes more viable. Had Idaho hung around, the 6 would have had it even easier.

RE: Liberty to announce 2018 schedule Sat and future FBS games
Liberty is taking Troy's spot for Nov 3rd and see the Troy game is rescheduled for 2020.
Quote:During their commencement ceremonies on Saturday, the Liberty Flames announced numerous future football opponents as they complete the move to FBS for the 2018 season as an independent program. One of those games is a trip to the University of Massachusetts on November 3rd, 2018.

A complete list of Liberty's known future opponents and game dates can be found on the Flames blog A Sea of Red here.

This game gives the Minutemen 12 games in the 2018 season (at this time) with six at home and six on the road. They are not playing an FCS opponent at home in 2018 as of now, but Liberty will be in their first FBS season and are likely to resemble an FCS team more than an FBS one.

Despite both schools' status as FBS Independents, the 2018 game in Amherst is the only match-up announced between the schools at this time.
...
Troy's head coach, Neal Brown, played wide receiver for the University of Massachusetts and Mark Whipple in 2001 and 2002 after transferring from Kentucky. He was also began his coaching career with UMass in 2003, so if there were anyone who might be able to help UMass out as an opposing coach and facilitate a move to late November it would likely be Brown.

Per Troy University's official athletics website, their return trip to UMass, originally scheduled for 11/3/18, has been moved to September 19th, 2020.

RE: Liberty to announce 2018 schedule Sat and future FBS games
Attackcoog,

They don't work together, they have different agendas, different budgets.

Army stretches out November in December. They will play Air Force, Navy, and some FCS school, usually from the Patriot for 3 of the 4 games. They don't need to work with anyone, people will make room.

BYU loads up with P5 schools, and has MWC schools like Boise State and Utah State to fill a bit later in the schedule. Again no issue getting western schools to play them. Their difficulty is getting some of the P5 schools to play them later, not just September. Other Indies are not of much help with that.

Liberty has a boat load of cash from the pulpit and can buy their opponents, just like we are seeing.

NMSU is a beggar. Able to fill the front end, desperate on the back end of the schedule. (Idaho would be even worse shape wit the Kibbie Dome albatross).

Each has their own agenda, each works on their own.

Read the whole thing carefully and you will figure it out. "Liberty should be grateful to the SB"---where did you come up with that one?

LU overtly seeked Sun Belt Conference membership since it first announced it's FBS intentions 5 +/- years ago. The SBC turned LU down at least and likely 3 times. LU brought SBC prez and admins to view the facilities, all to no avail. LU should be grateful that any FBS team is playing them at this juncture, and, if LU has coughed up funds to make these games happen, this it's a favorable position for both teams.

The SB thing may have been a diversion by Liberty. Successful men with money know how to do those kind of things, when dealing with the simple.

Rabon, if you were to go and read the pertinent of the SBC posts 4-5 years back, and even up until LU got it's Feb indy status, the SBC board listed many credible examples ans specifics why LU was not receiving an SBC invite. If it was as simple as money that issue would have been solved long ago.

Conference, universities etc all have their own agenda. However it's seems clear that some work better together than others. Troy and UMass worked together so Liberty could have them both on the 2018 schedule.

LOL. And you guys get to play for.......the nothing Bowl. Or, the absolute last place bowl in a 'must take' scenario. Status? Nah. There's also some special considerations regarding bowls too that might make solving that problem a bit harder for LU. LU fans aren't likely to spend as much at restaurants and bars when out on the town. This might make other Bowl games reluctant to set up a deal with you guys. Sure, you can pay ESPN a pantload to gain entry, but still. That's not status.

---

Basically, LU's season is as follows. Lose one game and your best case scenario is.....the filler team in a bowl that doesn't want you.

---

Stronger schedule? Nah. We already play Troy and we didn't have to pay a million bucks to do it. Most of our teams didn't want to play NMSU, much less twice in one season. UMass would join the Belt in a second if asked for football only. They are a filler school for our teams. UNT isn't really missed by anyone in the Belt. Army is most likely a political issue (that might not last). UNM? No one in the Belt really cares about them. Anyone see the contract payment terms on these games?

You paid 1 million plus to get a g5 home game with ODU? I don't know who I am more embarrassed for...LU or ODU. I don't if 'status' is the word that I'd use in that case. You had to pay a school that will play other G5's for free.

UVa and WFU....okay. Nice plan on not letting their fans know about it until the contract was signed. It will be interesting to see how that goes over. We probably won't see the terms of the WFU contract (you are both private)....but Uva....that will be interesting.

---

I'm looking forward to seeing the payment terms in the contracts under FOIA. Especially the payday game with Rutgers. Did you sell the games at a heavy discount? If not, then RU's AD just paid a bunch of student and taxpayer subsidized money to help fund employment at a school that wont hire LGBTs or non-Christians. That's might present some awkward questions. Those questions will be asked.

---

LU's sales pitch...We're paying stupid amounts of money so you can get an easy set of OOC FBS wins...That's not a desirable status.

---

Had you been able to join the Sun Belt, you could have used all that money to buy a schedule with 2 P5 home games per year. Meanwhile, our teams will be playing Oklahoma State, Miami (FL), Boise State, etc. at home this year and didn't have to give away the farm to do it.

-----

Basically, you're at a nightclub where you, and you alone, have to pay a massive cover charge that no one else does. Status? Yea, I suppose it is a status in a way. But not a status anyone should be jealous of.

Either way, enjoy your schedule.

Welcome Tom, glad again to see your cheery, positive self is back with upbeat comments. That took quite some time to write another long, lengthy response bashing LU. Seems like we caught you on a good day today. Enjoy your team. Enjoy your conference. And LU fans, don't take Tom's bait. Just let him post and simmer.

Do you really think this was a good idea? UMass FBS football has opposition in the UMass community. And your political environment isn't particularly welcoming for schools that openly discriminate either. There are still states that bar their public employees from playing in North Carolina. I would suspect that playing at a school like LU with taxpayer dollars would be much more offensive unless LU is willing to make huge concessions (and they're not).

I get that UMass's AD has an interest in having more independent schools.

But can you imagine the situation if a Transgendered UMass student gets humiliated at a UMass - LU game in Lynchburg? Or if UMass students are thrown out of the stadium for wearing Gay supportive clothing? You know, there's a chance that both those scenarios might be tested. One bad move on LU's part (say if a M to F Transgendered UMass student shows up at the ladies room at LU's stadium during a game and faces so much as a nasty word) and all hell will break loose.

I don't think you guys thought this one through. You didn't need the game. Its just high risk.

Whether you care or not is kind of irrelevant. People do care at UMass. And some of them don't care how badly UMass' FBS program gets hurt in the process, as I suspect that they're not happy about paying student fees for the team. This isn't going to help UMass gain buyin from the people that are paying some of the bills of the program.

Either way, your program has needs and they made a choice based upon what they think those needs are. I seriously doubt they considered the other stakeholders in the program before doing so. I'd argue that a failure to consider those needs opens your program up for a much bigger risk. That the state legislature will get involved and the calls by some in the faculty and student body to end FBS football get louder.

And it could be stated that Liberty has a much stronger schedule and status than if it had been an SBC school playing a conference schedule with 1 or 2 P5 OOC games.

LOL. I get my cheery disposition towards LU from JFJ's cheery disposition towards us.

The only reason I commented on that was that you, sir, tried to imply that LU has some sort of desirable status that places it ahead of the Sun Belt.
