Oh, I guess Florida sucks too since they offered..

What a dunce!

Totally agree on the ranking bit. Doesn't mean a whole lot to me, either. If a player(s) fits what the coaches want to do--along with many variables--then I'm cool with it.

It is funny, though, that where Lomax is concerned, his rank doesn't matter much to the fans, while with other prospects who've been brought up here it's the first dynamic looked at.

I think it's because a lot of us have seen him play. When in doubt, I tend to look at offers. Sometimes you find a diamond in the rough, but not too likely. If a kid has lots of quality offers, that's a good indication of his skills...

We need a starting point guard. Martin would be a perfect backup.

You're a stats guy. Take a look at Martin's number this year, benchmark him against some other pg's, then get back to us on this.

In the 7th best conference in the country, against the other 10 point guards.

AAC (11 members)
4 - minutes played
7 - points
5 - assists (tied with 2 others)
5 - turnovers
5 - assist/turnover ratio
1 - field goal percentage
9 - free throw percentage
10 - 3 point field goal percentage

ACC (15 members)
1 - minutes played (tied with 1 other)
14 - points
5 - assists
5 - turnovers (tied with 3 others)
6 - assist/turnover ratio
7 - field goal percentage
15 - free throw percentage
15 - 3 point field goal percentage

So statistically, Martin was an average point guard in the worst major conference in basketball. He does a couple of things very well, some average and some very poorly. He took care of the ball well and shot 2 pointers probably better than any other point guard in either conference. He was a horrible free throw shooter and horrible 3 point shooter.

From watching him play, he has 3 major weaknesses. The first is that he is a bad 3 point shooter, so he doesn't stretch the defense at all. The second is that he isn't able to penetrate at all, so he doesn't create many opportunities for others, and the third is that because of this, he holds onto the ball much too far into the shot clock, which puts enormous pressure on the offense, and often results in bad shots being put up by him and everyone else.

He also doesn't dribble very well with his right hand, but I did see him trying to more the last half of the season, and he did seem to improve a little bit.

All in all, I would say that Martin is a slightly below average D1 point guard. It seems that you are satisfied with Memphis being average, and you will be satisfied with Tubby reaching his ceiling, which is an NCAA appearance every couple of years, zero Sweet 16's and 1 win every 10 years.

Good for you.

Good grief. Were you one of the ones all over Joe after his first season, too?

JMO, I think Martin can do a good job at PG. We need a backup for sure. Hopefully Jamal Johnson can be the shooting guard. That is a lot to ask a freshman but they do it every year at other programs. So...it will be interesting.
