I'm not a fan of his and Benzema should be starting if it weren't for xenophobia and racism. Falsely accused of blackmail and then exonerated on all charges however he is still persona non grata. On to the game Umtitti was excellent defensively and he scored the game winner, plus my Real guy Varane was huge winning headers and shutting down Lukaku!

That first half header from Varane saved a goal. The way the game was going at that time, if Belgium scores there they probably get another not long after.

Not sure if this was posted earlier. The NCAA rules committee decided not to have referees keep official game time. That task will remain with a visible scoreboard and timekeeper.

Officials can now use video review to check for violent conduct. Bands, musical instruments and artificial noisemakers are now allowed while the ball is in play.

RE: OT: Officially The Official Soccer Thread
Lloris is the reason France is in the finals. Belgium would have had multiple scores in the first half without his outstanding work in goal. I was rooting for Belgium as I think they have the best team but this was France’s day and they should be able to take care of whoever comes out of the England/Croatia match.
PS - Mbappe is fast.

Anyone remember when France almost lost to our U23 team last month and Deschamps job was hinging on a successful tournament?

No doubt he's a great player. I wonder what went down between him and Perez? I imagine both egos got in the way of him staying at RM.

Ronaldo wanted more $, he was making less than Neymar and Messi. Ronaldo felt that Perez and the club did not support him enough with the Spanish Tax authorities. I heard on Sirius XM Ch 157 that Ronaldo will pay hardly any taxes on his Endorsement Contracts since he is not an Italian citizen.

I heard that same thing on Sirius. He would pay 16 million in taxes on endorsements in Spain but only 100k in Italy.
I'd leave too.

So it looks like it came down to taxes on image rights? Makes sense. It seems lots of players in Spain run afoul of Spanish tax authorities when it comes to image rights.

I think it came down to no one is bigger than the club. They have been looking for a way out. It seems both found a good but not great solution. Ronaldo will be the man and through taxes actually probably gets a bump up in salary. Real moves some expenses to make room and unloads a player they were concerned may see a drop off in performance. Juve gets their world class star and might be able to make the books work to mostly avoid fair play snafu.
Seems a win all around.

Yeah, I can see that and it does seem like an overall win for both sides. However, if Perez had been willing to meet Ronaldo's pay demands, I'm pretty sure Ronaldo would have retired at RM. I don't see it going down this road with a certain other player and other La Liga team. I guess one can never really know though. My guess is RM doesn't do lifetime contracts, etc.

RE: OT: Officially The Official Soccer Thread
Perez got 100 million Euro for a 33 year old player. I dont see how this isnt a win for RM. Yes, RM has a ton of money but 100 mil is a 100 mil for a aging, depreciating asset. That roster will be a rebuild sooner rather than later. The core of that team is starting to age. You dont rebuild it all in one year bc RM has to win. But over the next 3 seasons youll see some of the players towards the end of their primes start to take reduced roles or transfered elsewhere. I doubt RM does what Barca did and hold on to some of their older players a season or two too long.

Oh I agree; however, but I think Barca only does those "lifetime" contracts for the likes of Iniesta, Messi, etc... Maybe it has more to do with the those players literally growing up in the club, etc. I just can't see Barca shipping Messi off for a tidy sum unless he wanted to be shipped off. I have a feeling the entire city of Barcelona would revolt, etc. Nevertheless, it is going to suck for future El Clasicos now that Ronaldo is gone. Those matches, while they will still be intense, just won't be the same without the Ronaldo/Messi duels. Of course all that could change if a certain PSG player makes a move and then all bets are off.
