RE: WAC Basketball Recruiting 2017-18
Leston Gordon from Lee College has committed to NMSU. Verbal Commits has him listed at 6'10 225-lbs. A year ago he was listed at 6'7 225-lbs. He appears to be added to bolster our undersized team.

Leston Gordon is a chiseled physical specimen. I equate NMSU's signing of Leston Gordon as being similar to Cal State Bakersfield's signing of Moataz Aly a year ago. Aly came to Bakersfield from Hutchinson JC where he only averaged 1.4 ppg and 2.1 rpg; as a sophomore there. Although Aly only averaged 2.5 ppg and 2.6 rpg this past season at CSUB, his athleticism, ability to quickly traverse the court in transition, and his shot blocking capabilities fit well into Barnes' aggressive style of defense. So, although Leston Gordon only averaged 3.4 ppg and 3.3 rpg while at Lee College last season, I think in similar fashion, Gordon will give Jans an aggressive big man who can disrupt opposing offenses with his length and athleticism.

Utah Valley add Eastern Michigan transfer Baylee Steele. He is a 6'11, 220-lbs, Junior. I suspect he will redshirt this season and be available for 2018-19.

Per Coach Jans, Marlon Jones will not be on the Aggie team for the 2017-18 season. He hasn't been on campus all summer.

NMSU adds Keyon Jones, a 6'2 junior guard from Odessa JC. Still waiting for the final 2017-18 Aggie roster to be formalized.

WAC Basketball Recruiting 2017-18
Don't quite know where to put this, but since it has to do with recruiting, I'll put it here. Matt Jackson is now classified as a walk-on to make room for guys that we have signed.

Is it common for players with scholarships to revert to walk on status? Can a university make this decision or does the student have to agree? Just curious.

Fairly certain the university holds all the power in that situation. However, when they take away the scholarship, that is typically when guys transfer, so it is good to see him stay around the program.

RE: WAC Basketball Recruiting 2017-18
Matt graduated with his undergrad in April and his body in a lot of ways just failed him last year with 4 surgeries in 10 months (Hip). So any school can't put resources into and athlete that they aren't sure will even be the same or play at the D1 level. As well as not many schools out there would give MJ5 a scholarship after when his hip has gone through so it was a smart choice to stay and try and be productive. I would think if his hip is 100 and have no issues going forward he should be a very serviceable cog in the GCU rotation.

Majerle is smart putting him on putting him as a walkon. He's not very good to begin with and now with all these injuries will be even less. He will be a body to help in practices but will probably not even get into games. Majerle is recruiting at another level especially now that GCU is eligible for the NCAA tournament.

Another PAC-12 guard that averaged under 10 points a game and was a 2 star recruit out of high school. I guess time will tell if Majerle struck gold with these Pac-12 transfers that really didn't do that well in the Pac-12. I think the kid that is better than both those Pac-12 guard transfers is the kid that played with Frayer GCU got. I'm not knocking it. We just recruited a 6'10 that averaged 2 points a game in junior college. WAC coaches just have to take chances like this on potential rather than what they did at a previous school sometimes.

Scholarships are only for a year and have to be renewed each year. So a coach or university can choose not to renew a scholarship.

If you are a recruiting nut then you understand that most kids are 2 star because they have never been evaluated. Nothing more, nothing less.

Apparently, NMSU has added Denver transfer CJ Bobbitt (6'7, 225, Jr.) to the program. He will sit out this season and be eligible for 2018-19. While at Denver he averaged 10.4 ppg and 4.8 rpg as a sophomore.

He made almost 30 3's last season making 37% of them. I think this is a good get.

UTRGV lands JUCO Isaiah Fontaine, a former Southern transfer. 6'10 F with 3 years eligibility remaining it appears. UTRGV is getting some size lately
