At the Sun Belt meeting today, Commissioner Karl Benson threw "cold water" at a G5 playoff. He said he wants better bowls for his conference.
No one, I repeat NO ONE wants a G5 playoff. It was a made up thing by espn and they failed in their attempt to push that narrative. Epic fail.

How likely do you think it is Mr. Benson gets his wish for better bowls?

Another reporter said MW commissioner Craig Thompson told her, after being asked about the possibility of G5 playoff, that he wouldn't go as far as calling it "ridiculous"--then he asked if she knew of a word that meant "close to ridiculous". lol.

That's the key everyone keeps missing. If a G5 playoff is worth 140-200 million---then why the hell don't we have ESPN laying big bucks on the table for G5 champ vs G5 champ bowl games? Or better yet---why doesn't ESPN ante up to create some good G5 champ vs high P5 selection bowl games?
The fact is, while I don't think a G5 playoff is worth anything close to what Frazier claims, I actually do think the general public is interested in watching the G5 champs in bowl games and the ratings tend to support me on that. If I were ESPN, I'd add some G5 champ vs P5 games to the bowl pool that includes the Liberty/Belk/Texas/Gator/Music City Bowls. Add the Vegas and NOLA bowls to that group and add the 4 G5 champs not in the access bowl to the pool of teams being distributed into those bowls. That means the team pool to fill those bowls would be the #3-#5 picks from the ACC/Big10/SEC plus 4 G5 champs.
There would be some good games there.

Not likely but that doesn't mean he will ever go with the false narrative about this FCS 2 playoff.

I don't know if you are mocking me, Benson, the fake playoff or espn.

Are you a real fan or an espn plant? Your school wouldn't of started up a football program and spent the money to go FBS to play in the fake FCS 2 playoff.

I applaud Commissioner Benson for that bold step. I'm sure he wrestled with the decision to comment given several member school AD's had already said they were opposed.
One thing the Belt has going for it is that outside of the Arizona Bowl, all the games are fairly accessible to significant numbers of the schools.

Presidents decide which means this playoff idea does not have a prayer.

If the G5 stays in FBS, then yes it is. Otherwise, if it's a tweener conference for football, without crossover games and outside the Bowl system, then it's not.
If they really wanted to be in a larger payoff, wait for the FBS playoff to expand or the entire conference could drop to FCS, play in a playoff and cut expenses.

Yeah ask Idaho fans about that drop to FCS cutting expenses.

Well, from what I can tell, the drop of 22 mens scholarships and 22 womens scholarships, and what would have to be lower travel costs, would be a cut in expenses.
In Idaho's case, their revenue went to virtually nil. But for all anyone knows it could have been a net overall change close to 0.
I think there is a disconnect between what a G5 playoff would actually look like and the discussion going on, both from benson's remarks and the fan boards like this.
What fans and Benson seem to be thinking about is something like FCS, where something like 16 schools (2-3 from each G5 conference) would be in a playoff. This will NEVER happen. Benson's comments appear to be about something like that.
However, a G5 playoff would mirror the P5 playoff. Basically it would replace the access Bowl slot with a 4 team playoff. 2 bowl games around Christmas would be designated G5 semi-final games, get upgraded media packages, and a Championship game would probably be around January 1st in place of the NY6 access game. Basically a 7th NYB. The same committee that picks 4 playoff schools and 7 P5 and one G5 for the NY6, would expand it's duties to select 8 P5 for 4 of those games, and 4 G5 for their playoff.
There is no evidence ESPN is pushing for this, maybe a trial balloon. I think the concept was mostly NIU's AD. IMO he is right, but the timing is 7 or 8 years too early. Many, even most, G5 schools are not yet convinced the gap is unbridgeable to P5 level. And anyway their fan bases are not ready to concede they are not the same level as P5 - they are FBS.
