Look for Navy to add Chip Kelly wrinkles to triple-option
Don’t be surprised to see Niumatalolo and Jasper tweak their triple-option offense with some ideas from the up-tempo master of option football.
Kelly was available to spend time in Annapolis after he was fired from his job as the San Francisco’s 49ers’ head coach, but it was his fast-paced style in the college game that earned his NFL opportunities with the Philadelphia Eagles before the 49ers.
Kelly lifted Oregon to national prominence. His Ducks won three Pac-12 titles and were the national runner-up to Auburn in the 2010 season’s Bowl Championship Series National Championship Game.
“Not too many coaches are innovators like he is,” Niumatalolo said on Navysports.com. “Some of the things he did at Oregon revolutionized football. Everybody is doing the no-huddle, using one-word concepts and using his offseason stuff. The things he’s done have been
implemented at (youth leagues), high schools, college and the pros. He’s phenomenal; he’s definitely a trend setter.”

Kelly has visited with Navy a few times in the past.
2014 for example:
Quote:Kelly watched the majority of practice from the field while talking with Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo. Afterward, Kelly spoke to all the players, coaches and support staff in attendance and by all accounts was inspirational.
“Chip Kelly is one of the finest football coaches, college or professional, in the country,” Niumatalolo said. “We were extremely honored to have Coach Kelly visit the Naval Academy and spend time at our practice.”
Kelly is a true football aficionado who is always looking to learn new things and had been eager to visit with Navy coaches and hear more about the program’s triple option.
“I think Chip Kelly is just a ball coach who can’t get enough of the game. He told our team that if you’re not always learning and evolving, you’re falling behind,” Niumatalolo said. “Coach Kelly is definitely one of the most innovative minds in all of football, which is why so many people are copying some of the things he’s done.”
Another 2014 story.
One of the primary goals of our offense is to limit the number of possessions that the other team gets, which is the exact opposite of CK's up tempo offense. So I think it may be equally likely (if not more likely) that CK was visiting Navy looking for things to adopt into his offense than Navy looking to adopt things from CK's offense.

No thanks! We do just fine with our legal cut blocking (which EVERYONE does, if maybe not as much).
thanks for the offer, though!

Back to NavyHusker's point - Kelly went 2-14 in a league that some pundits said he would revolutionize. Niumatalolo has gone 14-2 in a conference that some pundits said Navy couldn't survive. Who is going to imitate whom?

This reminds me of last summer when a large number of posters here thought Navy would maybe be around .500 because we graduated Keenan Reynolds & lots of starters.

Never underestimate Navy!!!! Because of their prep program in RI they have a major advantage over all AAC programs. Basically they are developing 150 kids at all times in their football program. Major advantage unique to them.

Well, had the right decision been made in the Tulsa game, you would have been one step closer to .500!

We currently have 129 players on the roster in Annapolis before the incoming Plebe class is included which typically is around 50-60 - never mind NAPS.
I don't know how much of an advantage it is when you counter it with the disadvantages the active duty requirement has on recruiting. Then there is the academic requirements just to get admitted. Then there is the daily grind of remaining academically eligible to stay at USNA
The prep school is unique compared to other AAC schools, but those same players can (and do) leave the program for other schools. It is always an item of interest how many NAPSters are on the list when we release the official football recruits list on Induction Day.

Navy attempted 8 passes & 64 rushing attempts with 1 punt & 0 FG attempts.
Tulsa attempted 27 passes & 38 rushing attempts with 1 punt & 2 FG attempts.
60 minutes of football and 141 plays (not including the 15 kickoffs). It is almost like Tulsa never had an opportunity to win the game.

That number of players working in a unique system creates a lot of depth. All programs suffer attrition. I was just saying it's one advantage that Navy has and they should take advantage of it. Never count them out. I would be willing to say they'll finish in the top 3 in the West each year and more than likely have a shot at winning the division.

You haven't been keeping up with your reading here...
The dropoff from Worth to Abey > the dropoff from Keenan Reynolds.
We were lucky to beat Houston (Herman-UT distractions), Tulsa (refs), and UConn (Diaco) last year.
We have a low ceiling (granted that's a mwc guy not an AAC poster).
I think this is the year everyone in conference figures out the offense.

I understand what you are saying. My point was that we don't have that many players at NAPS, not all of them will come to USNA, some who do come to USNA won't even try out for the team (NAPS also has some players who are simply playing football in order to field a team and were never recruited), and they aren't locked in/committed to Navy. NAPS typically has around 50-60 players on their roster, and roughly 30-ish will be on the incoming recruits list at USNA.
Balance that with almost no redshirting (rare medical conditions which delay their ability to graduate, Tago Smith did not get to apply for a redshirt) and I think that any advantage NAPS gives us is easily is balanced by redshirting.
You are right that it does help provide us some depth. Remember though that we don't have an infinite coaching staff. KN has stated that we are approaching the point where we don't have enough coaches to support that many players. It isn't so much that our class sizes of players has changed, our attrition has gone WAY down. It is more that KN & crew have done a superb job of developing The Brotherhood attitude and guys who have almost no chance of playing are staying on the team just to be a part of the team.

You are right about that. It is off season & I haven't been reading as much and definitely not commenting as much.
Despite the consensus that we should abandon all hope, we give a ship. And we don't give up the ship.
