That said, he's had the best team and #1 recruiting class numerous times. And, he has 1 title to show for it.
Give Coach K, Huggy Bear, Dana Altman, and about a dozen others his roster for the past 15 seasons and every one of them would have 3 or more titles.
They can't get those players though. So the point is moot. K gets those players and has 1 more title during this same period. Self and Roy get those same players and neither has a title during that period. I guess Roy and Self are just better coaches because they never "left" us.

Self obviously has one.
Roy has 2.

No problem, stall until you've done it while you're still technically employed by the school. Following the letter of the law. Spirit of the law? Stomping all over it. Hey, if they were never going to come here without his being here, why not announce you're taking the Ky job and sign 'em up when they come knocking? THAT would've been ethical, but that is not Cal.
Have an idea you might be leaving for your dream job next year? Write escape clauses into your school's Letters of Intent. Again, what's the purpose of an LOI? Signing one is referred to as "committing" to the school. But don't schools almost without exception let kids out of LOI's if something drastic happens, like the coach leaving? Yes. And again, allowing THAT to run its normal course would've been ethical, but that is not Cal.
Cal is uniquely qualified for his chosen profession. He could sell ice cubes to Eskimos, so convincing teenagers studying Sports Management on an athletic scholarship that the whole world is against them or that they are chasing greatness or whatever his latest mantra is easy for him. He likes being the center of attention, so he does well at booster gatherings and such, and he's fun to watch -- especially for the unpredictability factor. He's a guy with a mediocre IQ who can't be shamed and whose every motive is about stroking his own ego. Remind yourself of that, and everything he does starts to line up.
Sounds like you know him and have spoken to him and his recruits many times.
He's not on my Christmas card list.

I wish you had been around during this discussion. You could have helped set VV straight. He seemed to have a problem with thread comprehension - and tried to bully his way out of it by accusing others of something he struggled with.
Thing was, I never had a real issue with VV. He seemed fairly respectful and contributed here.
Crazy times. But alas he's just gone. All we have left is that asinine post. But you and I can continue to quote it and mock him if you want.

Stunned to a degree someone would bring up that tired line...as if no one understands that. The lingering resentment stems not from him taking the KY job, which is one of the best, it it that he did not rebuild them using their resources, but began the rebuilding with ours.
He lacked the internal fortitude and security to dare have a rebuilding year in year one at KY. So while being paid by us he actively recruited kids to Lexington. Note no one really resents Henry leaving for Kansas.
Those kids would have followed him to KY NO MATTER WHAT CAL DID.
I am pretty sure I am remembering this correctly..... When Roy Williams left Kansas to take the head job at North Carolina, he stated publically that he would not take any players to NC that he had been recruiting to play at Kansas and hoped that they would remain committed to Kansas.
That is how a coach should leave a program.
So, are you mad that Tubby took Clergeot?
I hear crickets
No, I am mad at Tubby that we finished the season so poorly. But if Clergeot was committed to Texas Tech than yes he should have not have offered him a scholarship here.

Explain to me how these young men were "ours"? If you are talking about a few hundred thousand recruiting $-and we know it wasn't a tenth that; Cal generated in excess of $100M in BB revenue that no other coach we could have hired would have generated during his tenure. He made Tiger games the place to be.

It ain't easy wearing stripes
"Kentucky fans rioted in the streets after the loss, burning televisions and couches , and later turned their attention to Higgins. He not only received damaging and false reviews on his business’ Facebook page , but also had death threats and was pestered by angry Kentucky fans repeatedly calling his company’s office and home phone number, despite the latter being unlisted, according to the ESPN report."
The complaint among Kentucky fans apparently centers around the number of foul calls in the game, and fans have targeted Higgins as the culprit. After the game, head coach John Calipari shared his own beef with what he felt was the excessive amount of fouls called in the loss.
“You know, it’s amazing that we were in that game where they practically fouled out my team,” said Calipari on Sunday. “Amazing that we had a chance.”

So Cal's telling us he actually did a great job. Congrats to him?
They are attacking Higgins with a vengeance. Won't be happy until he is bankrupt - maybe even dead.

Cal really oughta know his fan base better than that.
He was upsetz after the loss. It's hard to believe he thought through the remark he made that made the KY faithful seize on one ref to scapegoat.

KY fans love a good riot after both a win or a loss.

Anybody else would've been on the hot seat after eight years of parlaying a couple of NBA teams' worth of talent into only one title. Just shows you how good a salesman the dude is.

Like I noted earlier, Coach K had a 9 year run where he was the number 1 seed 8 times, five of which Duke was the AP #1 team headed into the tourney and he only advanced past the S16 four times, with 1 NC.
Coach K managed to take this years preseason #1 team with two of the past three #1 recruiting classes (the third came in at #2) and got bumped in the round of 32.

That may be the most ignorant statement I've ever heard on this board. Look at his record past 8 years and think about what you said. 5 final fours and 6 elite 8s in past 8 years and YOU ARE SAYING HE SHOULD BE ON HOT SEAT? Pure stupidity.
