Suckers, they should be like us then there'd never be any danger of some bigger team poaching their coach.

RE: UNCW loses Keatts; going to NC State
Is UNCW going to announce a nationwide search, take what seems like an unusual amount of time to make a hire and then hire a UNCW assistant that has never been a HC?
This is not a shot at Rowe, it's a shot at a broken process.

You do realize Keatts was not even a top assistant at Louisville and had no college head coaching experience when UNCW hired him?

Not a top assistant? You need to go brush up on your history. He was considered the 2nd most dangerous assistant in the COUNTRY when we hired him. He came as the result of a relationship he formed with our AD at a yearly get together of up and coming assistants.

Was he the #2 guy to Pitino? I thought his title was Director of Operations?

Shameful attempt to credentialize the hire of Low Rowe by analogizing to UNCW - just shameful:
- Keats was paid $600k by UNCW; Rowe is paid $200k; basketball is clearly more important to UNCW as Alger would never pay that much
- Keats sent 103 players to D1 scholarships a head coach at Hargrove Academy.
- Rick Pitino quote - "he has total package, he does not have a weakness as a coach, he is an outstanding recruiter, he was a big factor in us willing the National Championship"
The Row hire was another example of gross negligence by JMU. Everyone with a brain knows this.

I'm not going to defend JMU and the Rowe hire but I just wanted to correct you. Keatts was hired for $300K+ he received a couple of raises since he was hired based on performance to get him to the $600K you are citing. He may have even taken a small pay cut to move from his assistant spot at Louisville to the head job at UNCW. Here is the link to the article when UNCW hired Keatts in 2014. $320K contract for 5 years at the time. $18K more than JMU was paying Brady at the time.
http://dubhub.blogs.starnewsonline.com/2...-contract/
Rowe is paid $260K- but if $200K to $600K helps support your outrage don't let the facts get in the way.
One other note- I follow this coaching stuff pretty closely. I have never heard Sanchez from UVA's name for another opening. He's either very content at UVA or not that highly thought of or maybe both. That may be why the job with JMU didn't come through. Not all high major assistants are created equal. It's easy to pick on JMU based on one year and relative to the UNCW hire in hindsight. Let's see who UNCW hires to replace Keatts, what they pay them etc. The hires between Brownell and Keatts were duds. Obviously if you are a fan of theirs they would be smart to keep momentum going and bring in someone good and even keep the salary pretty even but don't be surprised if they hire a high major assistant if the starting salary is in the low $300Ks because that is where the market is.
Selfishly this is a good thing for JMU MBB. Keatts like Smart was a very dynamic coach at this level. They would have been very tough to overcome for as long as he was the head coach. The rest of the remaining CAA coaches are ok but not extraordinary. This bodes well for JMU MBB for as long as we are in the CAA.

RE: UNCW loses Keatts; going to NC State
Any time the CAA loses good coaches or good schools, it's bad for every school, including JMU. The goal should be to get back to multiple bids, which fills the coffers of EVERY member and improves recruiting. If UNCW takes a step back, you are then banking on JMU winning the CAA tournament as is every other school.
If we can make the right hire, don't assume we're dropping to the bottom. It's not like our administration didn't see this coming and were caught off guard. I know for a fact our AD and Chancellor identified potential coaches nationwide months ago and are fully prepared to move quickly. We still have the fan base, the pay scale, the reputation as a winner and five very good incoming players next year. We also have Pitino and Keatts giving the highest praise and recommendation to any coach considering the job.
Our AD, and more importantly our chancellor and trustees realize the importance of making a good hire quickly...we ain't JMU.... :-)

82 I realize why you are a little raw and defensive after having lost your head coach yesterday. I hear what you are saying I'm just being practical. Multi bids is tough to get to- CAA was single bid before the VCU GMU run (when you guys were good the first time around under Wainright and Brownell) so it's not an easy thing to think the stars will align again. There are solid mid major programs but no standouts. JMU had trouble against Keatts and UNCW. I don't think they even beat you once during his time there. So it's a good thing as a JMU fan that he's gone. I'm not expected you guys to drop off though. I'm sure you will continue to be among the best in the conference. The change just gives me hope that you will be beatable again.

Football is a nice burn....but softball?? Come on. Women's bball would have been a better choice. At least that's a fully funded sport due to Title IX.
I miss when you guys were consistently solid in baseball. The conference was fun in those days from a baseball perspective. Looks like you're off to a good start this year though.

We're looking promising so far this year and have a win over a ranked ccu team.
The jury is still out, as we're just beating up on the little sisters of the poor. At least we're beating them though. We used to not even be able to do that.

why not softball? it gets as much air time on ESPN now as baseball does and we drew over 2,000 each to our super regional games last year.
look at this list and tell me you wouldn't want to see UNCW in that company. In any sport
http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/softball/d1
and it's not a one year wonder. we have been up there for a few years now and show no signs of slipping any time soon.
and yes, women's hoops...when you win 24+ games for 12 straight seasons, you are doing something right in that sport as well.
by the way, Clemson just announced they are starting a softball team. Clearly the P5 schools are viewing that as a sport that garners attention.

ahem...softball? Mkay.
Football isn't in our cards and never has been. Our location precludes that with an ocean to our east, the South Carolina border just to our south, a small city surrounding us, and large fan bases for football in every major city around us in every direction. Simply no more room for a strong program in our state.
We're happy to not have the anchor of football around our neck right now. All signs indicate football is getting worse for non-P5 schools, not better. That's why we can focus on the sport with the most ROI, which is men's basketball. And we'll gladly take that trade off.
Regardless, I've been a fan and graduate of the school since 1988. Not once did our fan base ever wish for the demise of another program so we could advance. We've always wanted the strongest possible CAA for the sake of all in the conference. And I don't think we're as far from mulit-bids again as I hear all the time.
CofC has everything needed to contend in the CAA and beyond every year. UNCW has that ability as well. Elon is making huge leaps in a short period of time, and is ready to break ground on a 5,000+ seat state of the art basketball arena. Hofstra pays its coach well and is focused on basketball. JMU may get there, and hopefully the Tribe can stay on track. Once we get back to two really strong programs, the potential for 2-3 in the NCAA's returns as well. So, there is no reason to root for lesser competition in the CAA. Otherwise, why not go to a lesser basketball conference that is guaranteed one bid for the foreseeable future? I hear the Big South is looking.

82hawk,
Who are the names being thrown around as replacements? If UNCW's fanbase is like most, I'm sure there are those who think John Calipari will be coming to Wilmington. :>) But, realistically, who are the hottest names?
Thanks in advance for the guidance. (I'm too lazy to go to your board to find out myself)

First place to look is our own bench. Takayo Siddle has already been named Interim Head Coach, so he at least deserves an interview.
Next up would be Louisville or Minnesota's bench. Landing another Pitino assistant would be a good move.
NC Central's Levelle Moton would also be a decent name.
Other names are getting thrown around, like Darrin Horn, but it's hard to say who the "top guys" are at this stage.
