RE: Brian Gregory to USF
The reality is that anyone expecting drastic improvement in USF basketball in the near future is smoking some heavy duty weed. Gregory needs to come in and start from scratch so if he is a good recruiter and good at getting players to graduate which most seem to agree with then he is the right guy. Because what USF needs more than anything else is to get players and get them to graduate/ stop the revolving door under Antigua that will crush our APR. once he is able to stabilize that then getting us to be decent is next. So we aren't talking about NIT or NCAA or even winning records in next three years. Just stabilize the program

there are better retreads out there...
You are surely right. I was just saying that he did have some good success at Dayton.
Hopefully he stabilizes USF program.. and given time I would guess that he will.

Your comment is a good reflection on how bad our program has become, and I agree with that... But you seem to be setting the bar pretty low. This isn't football. Solid players and 3-4 really talented kids can make us competitive. Although it probably will, I'm not sure it necessarily HAS to take a great many years.

RE: Brian Gregory to USF
basketball isn't football, one good player can turn around a program in a single offseason. If he can get 2 good players then things can really change. It may take years to rebuild the "program" (culture, academics, etc.) but it shouldn't take long to get good if he can get the right players and keep the quality ones already on the team.
USF not letting a coach pick their own assistants is pretty scary though, leads me to believe any coach is set up to fail there.

Where did you read about not letting him pick assistants?
The bar will be low at USF. As long as he stabilizes the program and improves each year he will be given time. I'll say if he can get USF to .500 by year three he has done a good job.

An uninspiring hire for an uninspiring basketball program. So, in an odd and uninspiring way, a perfect fit.

Agree that basketball should be easier than football.
It's weird watching UCF bounce into and out of a winless season (twice not counting 1980) and then seeing USF go through hire after hire after hire.
Heck even we had a raw deal in Donnie jones with NCAA issues to boot.
Just fix it and move on. Stop making this so hard to watch in Tampa

If you think about it ECU hired a completely failed coach. ECU hired Lebo after he was fired from Auburn. Frigging Auburn fired Lebo. Lebo has never ever coach an NCAA tournament team in his 20 years as a D1 head coach.

Yeah, people forget USF made the NCAA tourn a couple times in the Big East which was very loaded then. I think USF even went 12-6 in the Big East one year (could be off, going off memory, too lazy to look up). I also remember USF winning a First four game as an 11 seed and a round of 64 game and came very close to getting to sweet 16. This wasn't very long ago, so it can be done.
As for the hire, it's OK. I kinda liked it. He has a decent resume. Realistically, with USF's roster next year and the rebuild job, we weren't going to have tons of coaches banging down our door.

RE: Brian Gregory to USF
I remember way back in 1991 when it was announced that South Florida was joining the Metro along with VCU and UNCC. The Bulls had made the Dance the previous year as a 15-seed out of the old Sun Belt and played a close-ish game against Arizona in the first round. Those three expansion teams were joining Louisville, Tulane, Southern Miss, and VaTech to form a 7-team league (NCAA minimum was 6 in those days).
My sports-friends and I at Tulane were all agreed that USF was going to be the big power of the 3 newbies, and probably second overall after Louisville. And USF has had some solid seasons in the past 25 yrs. -- they (and Tulane, too) were an at-large pick to the Dance in '92, their first year in the Metro. But year-in-year-out, they've never been quite as strong as I thought they'd be when they left the 'Belt.

I don't think that was the case as usf made the NCAA's just once during their Big East tenure (2012), which was their first NCAA appearance since 1992 when they were in the Metro Conf.
Sounds like it's some usf fans like you that mis-remembers what usf actually did (or didn't do) during their 8 year membership in the Big East.
usf big East conf record was 38-102.

Meh.
My 2 schools. USF & Ga Tech.
I could not stand to watch Ga Tech with Gregory as Coach. Celebrated when he was let go last year.
Oh Crap. Now he is with USF.

You're right it was once. I was also thinking about the 2010 team who made the NIT after finishing with 20 wins and 9-9 in Big East play. For some reason I had thought they made NCAA, but it was actually NIT.

Agree with all of the above but especially the [b]
Bartow seems like a good coach. Problem is, the situation at USF is not simply a 'normal' run of 'being bad'. It's a complete implosion of the program. Investigation, MANY players bailing, players leaving MID SEASON... speaks volumes. Frankly I can't believe it's become this bad... but that's probably why they wanted a clean slate. To call us a project is the understatement of the year... I think it takes years to rebuild.
Sad but true characterization of our program.

Basketball doesn't take as long to rebuild as football. All you need is a couple studs to commit and turn the program around by riding them.

Yes, but you do need a good coach, and studs are hard to come by at our level, they have lots of options and there are fewer "diamonds in the rough" than there are in football to slip through the cracks down to us.
