RE: Who Should Replace Tubby?
If Tubby catches fire and has four great years he will still be retiring around then.

If the rabbit hadn't stopped to **** he'd have won the race.
Tubby may or may not kick ass at Memphis but unless he can convince DL to hang around it ain't gonna be next year.

I asked the question because the thread asks a question. A hypothetical question, which is what mine is.

There will be much relief and rejoicing . Feasts will be held in his honor and a parade down Beale Street. Fans will once again meet the team at the airport since they will be flying a lot more again.
I'd say Tubby 'kicking ass' next year would equate to an NCAA tournament spot after three years of zilch.

I wholeheartedly disagree with this talent disparity remark....If you look at the games he teams that are in the postseason.....Even with the lack of depth,we match up extremely well aside from height disparities and strength.....And Tubby illuded to the fact that the strength program started l8! I guess that was Sals responsibility? We had several teams on the ropes that were pretty good teams....We beat Oklahoma at home beat South Carolina here.....played tough against SMU and Cindy Uconn and beat Houston at their place...had a significant lead against Ole Miss.....
Tubby also admitted that he didn't get the reserves as ready to play as he should have.....Many faults go to Tubbs and THIS team HAD talent.....I'm going to ASSUME that the talent didn't fit TUBBYS desired style of play

If the Tigers are winning we are happy with the coach
If the Tigers aren't dancing nobody likes the coach.
Right now, I don't like the coach.

NIT his first year and 4 straight NCAAs will give a guy a chance. When he lost fan base it was very bad as that affected everything with the program. I'm convinced had he had a reasonable contract, he would have been let go after 14-15 season when fans started bailing out big time.
Mack might not due to city ties, but you can probably count on less than 10 fingers the number of coaches that would not come here for $4.5M, 4 year contract and total control of BB. Like we offered Cal.
And you can count less than 5 coaches who would be deserving of a contract offer
like that, none of which would come here...

RE: Who Should Replace Tubby?
If you're not going to shoot for the moon - offering Gregg Marshall or Billy Donovan or Archie Miller or similar an insane contract, then you have to identify the next up and comer BEFORE they become a big name
Eric Musselman, Steve Forbes, Danny Hurley, King Rice, Leon Rice, Matt McCall, Pat Kelsey, Jamion Christian, Mike Rhoades, are seemingly the next in that line now that Kevin Keatts is at NCST and Will Wade moved to LSU.
And even in that scenario, some of those guys may have a little too much shine on them now - i.e. Musselman, Hurley, Forbes.

You leave no middle ground for a Tubby, Crean, Dawkins, Barnes, Pearl type. It's another legitimate option - whether you like it or not.
It's a good list of up-comers though. I doubt that Forbes is at the top tier of that list yet. Musselman, Hurley, Kelsey, McCall - yes.

Define "legitimate".
The retread is definitely an option.
But I was thinking more roll the dice/swing for the fences versus playing it safe.

I don't think Kelsey has done anything better than Forbes at this point. McCall either.

RE: Who Should Replace Tubby?
However, we will see if the retread works at Memphis.
It worked at San Diego State and so far looks okay at UCF, but time will tell on that one.

Worked at Memphis once upon a time with a recycle who'd been booted from the NBA.

Well, Kelsey just got a new gig at UMass.
McCall's name has been mentioned for a couple of years.
Forbes is not a hot name yet. Maybe next year.

I guess Cal is technically a retread - he was still young and his resume was pretty successful, especially in college.
Pros and DI are different animals. Petrino and Saban were going to get canned in the pros.

RE: Who Should Replace Tubby?
Tubby was pretty much going down the CBB ladder (job-wise) and was getting up there in age, thus retread in more ways than one. He was also fired at the DI level - reasons can be argued for why, but he was.
I think if you'd ask 10 out of 10 Memphis fans then and now, that 10 out of 10 would consider the hiring of John Calipari as swinging for the fences. I doubt you'd get 5 out of 10 to say the same thing about Tubby Smith or if it had been Steve Fisher or Rollie Massimino.
IMO
