Q. In the recap on Saturday, it was stated that 7 national seeds are essentially set going in this final week. The final national seed spot comes down to 3 teams - Stanford, Kentucky and Southern Miss. Give us a breakdown of the situation...Stanford has the lowest RPI of the 3 but a much better resume than Southern Miss, but gets stuck with Washington State this weekend which does not help. Southern Miss is red hot so the current status of the team looks good albeit with no quality wins. And Kentucky will have a chance to take care of business with a good SEC tournament. Who is your leader in the clubhouse for that last national seed as we stand today? And who ends up with it come Monday?
A. I think you did a pretty good job cutting to the heart of it. I don't want to spoil the suspense for tomorrow's field of 64 projection (we've already recorded the nerdcast), so I'm not going to tell you who we settled on. But certainly I think we all believe that Southern Miss would be hard to deny if it can keep this winning streak going through the conference tournament -- an 18-game winning streak heading into selection monday would be awfully loud. And I don't expect the Wazzu series to crush Stanford in the RPI -- WSU is No. 103, with a roughly .500 overall record. Shouldn't have much of an effect, especially since those games are on the road.
Q. You mentioned 3 potential teams for national seed. If USM goes 4-0, what do they need the other two to do?
A. Brett -- If Southern Miss goes 4-0 and wins the conference tournament and Stanford and Kentucky both have strong weeks, boy, the committee has an incredibly difficult job to do because I think all three would have outstanding resumes to be a national seed. For now, in that scenario, I would probably lean USM for the simple fact it dominated both aspects of the season (regular and conference tournament).
Another:
Q: Does Ole Miss or Mississippi State go to Hattiesburg, or does the committee send an out of state team to USM?
A: Eagle — I think Miss State ends up as the two in Hattiesburg, we’ll see though

That was my question.
If the committee decides that an SEC school in Hattiesburg too much of a cluster****, then they could send some Big 12 team as the #2. Baylor, Oklahoma, maybe Texas.

The obvious doesn't always happen so I do not believe State goes to Hattiesburg. Oregon State was sent packing west to Baton Rouge and to Dallas, TX as a 2 seed in the past 5 years. Seen it many times where a solid program as a 2 seed leaps multiple states to play a regional. I think the committee will look at it and move MS State west and bring SEC ball to a location that doesn't typically see SEC competition.

I realize we need to take care of our own business but a little help is always good. Here's a couple of games from Tuesday that could benefit us as we played 5 games combined vs Ole Miss, Tulane and State while Clemson is one spot ahead of us in the RPIs:
2:00 PM Tulane (74) vs USF (18) -- AAC tourney
4:30 PM Ole Miss (32) vs Auburn (43) -- SEC tourney
6:00 PM Clemson (9) vs Duke (97) -- ACC tourney
7:30 PM Ms State (30) vs Georgia (84) -- SEC tourney

Can't see Ole Miss going back to another LA regional so soon.

The projections mean more than last week but they are still worthless. Especially since the conference tournaments haven't been played. Every projection looks completely different and will always look different at this point.
Anyone know the date of the official selections?

Southern Miss doesn’t stack up with Kentucky or Stanford in the quality wins department, but it does stand out for its active 14-game winning streak and its domination of Conference USA, which it won by six games with a 25-5 record. If the Golden Eagles can keep that winning streak going through the conference tournament in nearby Biloxi, the committee may decide that an 18-game winning streak combined with a regular-season and conference tournament championship outweighs its other shortcomings. Stay tuned.
