Memphis Tiger BBall History Lesson - What Did Re-Builds Look Like For Past Coaches
I took a look at the re-build each Memphis basketball coach had to ensure dating back to 1970...

Tubby Smith - took over for Josh Pastner
- Took over a program that made the NCAAs 4 out of the previous 7 years
- TDB

Pastner - took over for Calipari
- Took over a program that had made the NCAAs 6 out of the previous 7 years.
- Made NCAAs in Year 2

Calipari - took over for Price/Jones
- Took over a program that hadn't made the NCAAs in 4 seasons.
- Made NCAAs in Year 3

Price - took over for Finch
- Took over a program that made the NCAAs 4 out of the previous 6 years.
- Failed to make NCAAs in his short tenure.

Finch - took over for Kirk
- Took over a program that made the NCAAs 5 straight years.
- Would've made the NCAAs in Year 1 if not on probation.

Kirk - took over for Yates
- Took over a program that made the NCAAs just once in 5 years.
- Made NCAAs in Year 3

Yates - took over for Bartow
- Took over a program that made the NCAAs only one time in 11 seasons.
- Made NCAAs in Year 2.

Bartow - took over for Iba
- Took over a program that had made the NCAAs only once in 14 years
- Made NCAAs in Year 3

Maybe we should have some patience. If history is a fair indicator, things should turn around in a couple of years. From there we build...

It's a different age now with social media. Negativity spreads a lot faster.

Wow, reasonable and sound posts don't get the attention it deserves.

Based on past history, it is reasonable (barring a Porter type disaster) to give Tubby three years (including this year) to make the NCAA Tourney.

This is 2017. With social media and recruiting services, it's easy to foreshadow what your immediate future looks like. And our immediate future is looking pretty grim. This was a bad hire all around.

All fine and good. But he's here for at least 3 more years unless he gets in trouble off the court. We are in the same boat now as we were with Pastner.

The guy was hired in April for crying out loud. I agree he should have been able to keep the players who committed here under CJP. This bad hire assumption is predicted upon what? This is not rational thinking when the guy has not had a chance to get what he needs in place to get this engine in full gear again. That's all I'm saying.

He's got two young assistant coaches working the social media angle. Hell, what are they doing? They better get off their azzes and recruit. Just like Norvell assessed the missing pieces he needed in football. I know this basketball staff identifies the weaknesses on this team and work towards improving those weaknesses.

Past Tiger coaches lasting at least three years have made the NCAA Tourney by year two or year three. IMO, it is unreasonable not to include this season. Also, please keep in mind that it is easier to enter the NCAA Tourney now than it was as recently as 2010.

While it is a little more complicated than just looking at NCAA tourney appearances...the idea of calming the histrionics is a good one.

Terrible, arguably worst ever game and tough finish to the season shouldn't completely obscure what was a promising step up season, with room for more promise.

Next year...so much depends on Dedric.

I'm not sure I agree with that last sentence. It's easier for the P5 plus the big east for sure.

RE: Memphis Tiger BBall History Lesson - What Did Re-Builds Look Like For Past Coaches
IF Tubby had recruited our OWN commits and players, we are probably on the bubble or in the tournament. Charlie Moore told ME that Tubby didn't talk to him for I think 2 weeks-it was a long time and I unfollowed Charlie after he left us and can't find the dang tweet. He can play PG for just about any team in the country. That's been one of our main problems all year. Martin has really only came into to his own since Tubby started playing him off the ball as I had to point out to our beat writer who didn't pick up on that. So at least a 3 game swing there.

Marshall: Go after the guy-give him a second chance everyone deserves. Get his academics worked out in fall semester but let him practice with team. 2 game swing there as our bigs just step aside on layups most of the time; would certainly help rebounding and possibly keep Dedric here NEXT year.

So a five game swing puts us at 24-7 and in the tourney with SC and possibly one more big win.
