Liberty granted waiver to join FBS as an independent
To me, this waiver looks like a way to avoid having the floodgates blown open through a lawsuit. I do expect some other programs to follow suit.

I thought the NCAA was not allowing schools to come up to this level unless they joined a 1-A conference.

Weird that programs like Idaho are leaving the FBS for FCS, but programs like Liberty are coming from the FCS to the FBS. What makes Liberty think they can compete with the big boys?

Reread the subject line

They have an obscene amount of money from their online diploma mill operations, and the financial backing of the Southern Baptists. They want to become the BYU of Evangelists and see FBS as a way to further beat people over their heads with the Bible.

Liberty has believed they can compete for some time, they just haven't been able to find a conference willing to take in a controversial private Baptist college.

If you want to know the difference between Liberty and Idaho, look at Idaho's small budget and smaller attendance.

Liberty is lacking plenty, but they arent lacking for money, and if there's one factor that can make FBS indeoendence feasible, it's money.

And what a misguided plan.

BYU is an established brand and a true pillar of the LDS community. BYU also has a much larger audience of unaffiliated fans. That is to say, there are far more Mormon's who may have a passing interest in football, but no team to root for based on where they live or where they went to school.

Where is the largest concentration of Evangelicals? SEC country. Liberty isn't picking up many fans, certainly not more than casual anyhow, in the southeast.

Maybe Liberty could become the next Baylor with their Christian standards blending with their athletics so well.

LOL, that's a spot-on way to put it.

They also just hired the recently fired Baylor AD.

I think they'll be a good addition to FBS. They want to push to 35,000 seats and can pull in kids from conservative christian academies across the south.

At least they have god to help them. We had a line of poor AD's including that one.

Baylor to people in Texas is a rich kid school. Its a state that is very conservative to begin with so Baylor isn't far from the center. Win at all costs football is the tradition in Texas.

Virginia is known for its well to do colleges. Liberty is looking to increase prestige by playing the top level more so than domination. They could draw well and make some bowl games. They know that a P5 or anything beyond a conference with SBC level schools is out of the question.

Good for Liberty! They have a vision for their athletics program and there's nothing wrong with it! In fact I admire the fact they see value in developing a high profile athletics program as a platform to promote the University. They are shooting for the stars! I'm all for dreaming big! They want Liberty to be the evangelical equivalent to Norte Dame or BYU.

I noticed the word controversial used in describing Liberty? What's so controversial about them? I see Liberty as no different than a catholic or Mormon faith based university.

Well depends on who you compare them to. They have a reputation as a diploma mill that most of the religiously backed universities you are thinking do not have. On top of that they have an academic reputation that is more heavilly influenced by religion than most of the schools that you may think of that is not always well received. In that regard they are more like Baylor than Duke or even a TCU type school (one might think that TCU and Baylor would be very similar but in actuality they are quite different in how religion affects how the school is run).
