I'm just not with KB on this one I'd rather Wheatley even though he is a U of M guy. Lester just does seem very bonoish of a hire. To me that is just not good enough coming off a 13 win season.

If it's down to those two, I take Wheatley all day every day.

Why, what has Tyrone Wheatley ever done as a Head Coach? Or even as a Coordinator? Oh that's right-NOTHING.
I think you guys should take a run at Saban

RE: Tim Lester Interviewed
In Bill Cubit's last season at Broncos head coach-when everyone pretty much knew he was going to be fired-our starting QB Alex Carder was playing injured down the stretch. Cubit had the choice to pick between AC to start the last two games or his understudy Tyler Van Tubergan. Winning those last two games would have given us a respectable 6-6 season, but Cubit felt he 'owed' AC the start because he was in his 5th season. We lost those two games, ended up 4-8 and Cubit was fired as soon as the season ended.

I HOPE that Kathy, getting close to retirement, isn't feeling she 'owes' Tim Lester this job. I really hope that's not the reason she hires him-if she does. Loyalty is a great thing, but this program isn't hers-it's all of ours.

Hey 7... go back to your NIU board and watch from there... we have never been in this position before. The position where we come off a NY6 bowl and lose our coach merely one week before the recruiting dead period.... and we are losing our University Prez this year... Our AD likely had to wait another week because of the timing of the AFCA conference... and she's been down with pneumonia... This whole thing has been nuts...

btw - 7... nothing personal. We are all on edge here. Delusional at times.. YES... who wouldn't be. Shoot for the stars and hope for the moon!

GO BRONCOS!

True. It'd be contradictory in firing Cubit seemingly minutes after the last game ended (due to him playing AC when we had a Legit chance to be 6-6 instead). I also don't think the writing was on the wall that Cubit was out, despite there being a decent shot that he would. I think that probably depended on potential HC availabilities -- but him doing the injured-AC thing pretty much iced it since his relationship with the admin and such allegedly wasn't so hot anyway.

Quote:I think you guys should take a run at Saban

Well, Saban was DC at MSU for several years, then DB coach for a couple years before having 1 year as a HC @Toledo and almost going undefeated. So he did have 5 years as a Coordinator prior to his 1st HC job (which followed many many years as DB coach). So I guess your point wasn't "Hey, Saban wasn't a Coordinator, look what he did!" :)

I think getting Tyrone Wheatley is a pretty sub-par, at least on paper. If he's the next PJ Fleck and there's something they glean that we can't -- OK. But getting seemingly PJ-Fleck-like people is going to more often result in sub-par to 'meh' results, after you get your 1st lucky strike.

I think since we Are at top-of-MAC, having gone to a BCS Bowl, and despite losing a senior QB & WR, we still have our running game and plenty of talent -- and a better D on the way... we should go for a better prospect than a gamble, right?

Until the top-line guys don't pan out for taking the job (Ferris & GVSU HCs, a top FCS coach, top Coordinator @Clemson and the like, etc) -- Then aim for Tyrone & Tim more.

However, who knows. Due to what Flush pointed out -- it's the AFCA Conference -- so they may just be getting the guys they CAN settle in with to interview, out of the way First -- while having higher prospects on deck to interview (?).

Either way, anyone in WMU's position is in position to strive for something more than a we'll-take-a-chance-on-him pick.

You tend to equate a desire for head coaching experience (FCS/Div II is fine) or coordinator experience as reaching too high into the sky, for some reason.

Has ANYONE ever been in this position before? How many times has a coach coached in a NY6/BCS bowl and left AFTER that game? Let alone all of the other issues we are facing...

So it's been said....and said....and said.

You going to bank on that 1 in a thousand role of the dice that we won with Fleck?

WMU football in 2017 is not WMU football in 2012-we can and must demand better now.

I think FCS coaches, FBS position coaches, and maybe a coordinator is exactly what most of this board has been thinking, so feel free to step down off your high horse.

I don't know, I've seen plenty of people out there saying they're going to go out there and throw 7 figures to bring in a coach, and that's just not going to happen.

To be honest, Western (or the boosters) paying PJ as much as they did the last couple years, in hindsight, was dumb. There was only a 600k buyout and he still left at the first P5 job that offered him.

Dumb? The folks with that money literally have money to burn. And I would think the publicity Kalamazoo received (which is where their loyalty and heart is) made it one heck of a tremendous investment. Miss you 7

PJ gave up the rights the minute he said he wanted to use it on marketing/promotional material and apparel.

RE: Tim Lester Interviewed
My understanding is that PJ did not have a choice. For it to be marketed, per NCAA rules, WMU had to have the trademark to RTB. I doubt PJ expected to have this much success this quickly and be taking a job at Minnesota after year four, even with all his talk otherwise. This was probably not a pressing issue at the time, but now with 20/20 hindsight...
