Jackie Battle - the Titans RB? :)
All four QBs have a shot, of course, and no one knows how Mitchell will perform in college practices, but I understand Rotger looked pretty darn good this fall.

If Rotger beats out Mitchell, and JL remains loyal to his starting QB like he always has, would Mitchell have any reason to stick around to get one year of playing time his senior year? I would think he has NFL aspirations and would try to transfer to somewhere he could play for more than a year.

If he is a QB with NFL aspirations, I don't think W&M would be his number one option. I think he has MBA aspirations and is in exactly the right place.

Loyalty aside, if (and its a big if) someone else comes along that is clearly above the other, I doubt there would be significant hesitation to change it around. Many teams also seem to alternate QBs throughout games to see who has the best in-game performance. Rogers may have a larger part now in the decision and he wasnt here during those years.

100% agreement. Anyway, this isn't HS where you should assume playing time your first season. He can have all the talent in the world but not gain a gametime grasp of the playbook. That said, Mitchell may have the best shot at it as he appears to be very talented and smart but also has over 5 extra months to nail the playbook.

Can't we just redshirt him?

Yes, of course. Nearly every freshman QB we've had has been designated redshirt fr.

Based on the comments, I'm guessing proximity to home may have also played a factor then. If he was concerned about setting himself up for an MBA and didn't care about playing time, he could have just as easily went to Wake and at least had the opportunity to play against ACC competition. I guess my only thing is that I'd like to see the high school career leader in passing yards for the state of Virginia start more than one year for us, especially since Cluley started for 3 years. This type of recruit doesn't come around that often. If memory serves, Phil Sims, the guy Mitchell beat out for the HS passing record in Virginia, went to Alabama.

Seem like locals who have seen more action are high on Rotger. Shon looks like a great talent, but he needs to bulk up a bit, and a red shirt could help in that regard. Would hate for him to get in the mix and get banged up and not get a chance to play to his potential. I saw a couple of local HS playoff games (5A) this fall, and was reminded of the overall size difference. A couple of big, muscular guys, but overall way smaller than the guys lining up each Saturday.

I continue to say, there is a lot to consider about a player transitioning from high school to college ball. It is very, very hard for true freshman to come in ready to go. Especially at the QB position.
Yes, Mitchell is enrolling this spring. Mentally he gets a head start over other freshman entering at other programs. Still, the physical nature of the next level is something to consider. There is a big difference between one 250lb, a couple 225lb high school d-linemen chasing you and 3-4 280lb-290lb junior FCS d-linemen chasing you. It's not the chase I am worried about either, its the impact when they do. Argue all you want about Steve's performance, but without his frame he would not have been able to sustain some of the hits he took throughout his career. Especially his first year, he took some vicious hits.
We will have a nice competition this spring, summer and fall. There is no need to rush to a decision. I would make these guys fight for the job all the way to September 1st.
Again, I am not a coach or have any right making this statement, but I could see us going into Virginia with 2 QB's ready to go.
Should be fun to watch.

RE: Some 2017 Predictions for Our Tribe Athletics
the difference between HS and college isn't about the size and speed for a QB, it's about reading complex defensive sets that have never been seen before, understanding a playbook that's usually 5-10 bigger, and making reads at the line.
I have no doubt that Shon is physically ready to play college football. It's the other stuff that takes time, and quite frankly requires game experience. Spending a year running the scout team and redshirting isn't the worst thing that could happen.
We will know right away in August about the future of Rotger and Battle. If either one is first team then it's their job to win in preseason. I'm excited that we have so many good options at QB going forward. Injuries do happen.......

RE: Some 2017 Predictions for Our Tribe Athletics
Out of curiosity, how do all of these guys (moreso in FBS) graduate in the Fall. When I graduated from HS, you needed 4 years of English and some other mandatory courses that would not have been possible in 3 1/2 years. Are schools making things up for these guys?
It also would have been impossible to overload on classes other years (and there were only a few 1/2 year classes) to make these options seemingly possible.

I studied abroad for a month and took an additional 6 credits in W'burg one summer...an entire semester in just a couple of hot summer months. I imagine an eager student could graduate in 3 years if he or she wanted to do that. Also, remember kids take AP courses in HS which, can accelerate completion of the burdensome mandatory courses very early on.

I meant how do they graduate from High School in 3 1/2 years so that they can go to college a semester early (enroll in the Spring so they can do Spring practice before most classmates are enrolled for their freshmen year). Think you were talking about graduating from college early which I have seen before.

I went to a VA state high school and I don't think it would be that difficult if you were on some advanced schedule to graduate a semester early with the "basic" (or whatever it's called) diploma. The requirements for simply graduating are pretty minimal and I knew people who only took 3 classes second semester of senior year and still received "advanced" diplomas. If you already have a college lined up to go to it makes a lot of sense. But it would interfere with AP or IB tests and classes.

The majority of high schools in Virginia operate on a block schedule that allows students to finish a course in a semester. In addition, those only courses typically required for seniors are English and government, which could easily be taken in the prior summer even if the school doesn't use a block schedule. I have had more than one student who was outstanding academically, planned ahead, and was able to graduate at the end of first semester.

High School credits can now be earned in middle school in most school districts, which can accelerate completion of degree requirements. This, coupled with AP credits, makes completion in 3 1/2 years fairly common. With Mitchell having a 4.3 gpa we know he's had a heavy dose of AP classes.
